Chapter 9 - THE BOY COMES HOME

Gabriel's discharge came two weeks later. His doctors approved the move with a care plan: daily medication, regular cardiology visits, and restrictions on strenuous activity until his next evaluation. Elena learned every instruction by heart. Mateo installed safety rails in the bathroom and turned the spare bedroom into a bright room with blue curtains.

Sofia helped choose the bedding.

“Gabriel likes elephants,” she explained to the decorator. “And I like stars. So the room needs both.”

When Gabriel arrived, he stood at the doorway holding his blue elephant.

“Is this really my room?”

“It can be,” Mateo said. “If you want it.”

Gabriel walked to the bed and touched the blanket. “Can I sleep here?”

“Of course,” Elena said.

“Will you be here in the morning?”

“I'll be here.”

He looked at Mateo. “Both of you?”

“Both of us.”

That night, Gabriel woke twice. The first time, Elena sat beside him until he fell asleep. The second time, Mateo came in carrying the elephant he had promised to keep safe.

Gabriel reached for it. “You kept him.”

“I told you I would.”

The boy studied his father's face. “Are you going to go away?”

Mateo sat on the edge of the bed. “No. But I know promises can be hard to believe when people have broken them. So I'll show you.”

For the next month, Mateo changed his schedule. He attended every medical appointment, learned how to prepare Gabriel's medication, and read bedtime stories in a voice that made Sofia giggle.

Elena began to heal in small ways. She stopped waking from dreams of the hospital. She placed the empty memorial certificate in a drawer and put Gabriel's first photograph on the mantel.

But the Moretti family crisis was not over. The police confirmed that Rafael had used the trust to fund private security and influence the adoption. He had been working with Beatriz, who believed she could keep the company under family control by hiding Gabriel until the trust clause could be rewritten.

Rafael's motive was more direct: he wanted the voting shares. He had not died in the boating accident. He had staged his disappearance after a financial investigation threatened to expose him. Gabriel's existence complicated the succession plan, so Rafael had helped Beatriz remove the child from the family records.

The police arrested him in Nevada. Beatriz was charged with fraud, unlawful transfer of a child, and obstruction. She was released pending trial under strict conditions.

One evening, Elena found Mateo in the nursery, looking at the old photograph of Gabriel.

“Do you regret it?” she asked.

“What?”

“Bringing him home. The danger. The court. Everything.”

Mateo turned toward her. “Not for one second.”

Elena sat beside him. “I keep thinking about all the things we missed.”

“We can't give him those years back.”

“No.”

“But we can give him the years ahead.”

From the hallway came Sofia's laughter. Gabriel was trying to teach her how to make the elephant dance.

Elena leaned against Mateo's shoulder. For the first time, the house sounded like a family again.
