Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

The emergency board meeting began at nine on Monday morning.
Ethan arrived in his wheelchair with Naomi beside him and Dr. Nair’s
written assessment in a folder on his lap.
Adrian stood at the head of the table.
He wore a dark suit and the confident expression of a man who had
already counted the votes.
“Ethan,” he said. “I’m glad you felt well enough to attend.”
“I wouldn’t miss a meeting about my own incapacity.”
Several directors exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Adrian began his presentation. He described Ethan’s declining health,
missed meetings, and inability to oversee daily operations. He
recommended that the board appoint an interim executive and grant Sophia
temporary authority over Ethan’s personal business affairs.
Sophia sat near the windows, dressed in cream silk.
She looked like the grieving partner of a man who had become too ill to
lead.
Adrian displayed a medical letter.
“Two physicians have expressed concern about Mr. Hale’s ability to make
complex decisions.”
Naomi stood.
“One of those letters is six months old. The second doctor has confirmed
that the document was not intended as a capacity assessment.”
Adrian’s smile faded.
Naomi placed Dr. Nair’s report on the table.
“Mr. Hale has undergone an independent evaluation. His cognitive
function is intact. His current physical condition is under active
medical review, and there is evidence that an unauthorized substance may
have interfered with his recovery.”
A director leaned forward.
“Are you alleging poisoning?”
“I’m saying that an independent laboratory identified a drug that was
not prescribed to him. The matter is now under criminal investigation.”
Sophia rose.
“This is absurd. Ethan has been confused and frightened for months. I
have been the only person consistently caring for him.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Then you should welcome the investigation.”
Adrian cut in. “This is a private medical matter. It has no place in a
corporate meeting.”
“It became a corporate matter when you requested control of my voting
authority,” Ethan replied.
Naomi distributed copies of the security footage stills and pharmacy
records.
The directors studied them in silence.
Then the board chair asked Adrian why he had met Sophia at the estate
after midnight.
Adrian’s face changed.
“I was discussing continuity planning.”
“Without notifying the board?”
“I was protecting the company.”
Ethan placed both hands on the armrests.
“No. You were planning to take it.”
The meeting was suspended.
Outside the boardroom, Sophia caught up with Ethan.
“You’ve destroyed everything,” she said.
He looked at her.
“You destroyed it when you decided my body was something you could
manage without my consent.”
May you like
For a second, her expression was empty.
Then she turned and walked away.
