Chapter 1 - THE WALL BEHIND THE FLOWERS

The first crack split the wedding portrait in half.

For one stunned second, the ballroom seemed to forget how to breathe. Then the glass shattered across the marble stage, scattering white petals around Olivia Hart's black shoes.

“YOUR WIFE IS INSIDE THAT WALL!”

Olivia stood with both hands wrapped around a brass hammer, her maid's uniform torn at the sleeve and a streak of blood running down her wrist.

Richard Hale stared at her. Beside him, Vanessa Cole lowered her bouquet. The smile she had worn for the cameras disappeared.

“Security!” Vanessa shouted. “Get her away from the stage!”

Two guards moved. Richard lifted one hand.

“Don't touch her.”

He looked at the damaged flower wall. Thousands of white roses had been arranged behind the wedding arch. The decorators had called it a masterpiece. Olivia had called it a hiding place.

A faint sound came from behind the broken frame.

Three knocks.

Then a muffled cry.

Richard went pale. “Emily?”

He seized the hammer from Olivia and struck the exposed panel. The first blow dented the wood. The second split it. On the third, a narrow section swung inward, revealing a dark compartment barely wide enough for a person.

A woman's hand emerged.

Richard dropped the hammer.

“Emily!”

He tore at the broken panel while Daniel, his head of security, rushed to help. Inside lay a woman in a pale dress, her wrists bound with plastic ties, her ankles secured, and a strip of cloth tied across her mouth. Her dark hair hung over her face. A silver wedding ring still circled her left hand.

Richard pulled the gag loose.

Emily drew a ragged breath and whispered, “Don't let her take the papers.”

Then her eyes rolled back.

The ballroom erupted. Guests screamed. Phones rose into the air. Vanessa backed toward the stage steps, but Daniel's men blocked the exit.

“Call an ambulance,” Richard ordered. “Now!”

Olivia dropped beside Emily and supported her head. “She's been asking for you.”

Richard looked at the maid. “How long?”

“I don't know exactly. I heard her yesterday. I heard her again this afternoon.”

Emily's fingers tightened around Olivia's sleeve.

“Olivia,” she rasped.

“I'm here.”

“Blue room. The blue room.”

Richard turned sharply. “What blue room?”

But Emily had fainted.

Paramedics arrived within minutes. They placed Emily on a stretcher and began checking her breathing. Richard followed, still wearing his wedding suit, one sleeve stained with blood from the broken frame.

Vanessa tried to approach.

“Richard, darling, this is a misunderstanding. She's been missing for over a year. Someone must have—”

“Don't call me darling.”

Her expression changed. “You're upset. I understand.”

“You knew.”

“I did not.”

Olivia stepped between them. “You told the decorators to seal the wall this morning. I heard you.”

Vanessa's face hardened. “You are a servant. You have no idea what you heard.”

“I heard a woman crying.”

Richard turned to Daniel. “Take Vanessa's phone. Nobody leaves until the police arrive.”

Vanessa laughed sharply. “You can't detain me because a maid tells a story.”

“No,” Richard said. “The police can.”

As the ambulance doors closed, Emily's hand slipped from the stretcher. Richard caught it. Her fingers were cold, but they curled around his.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

Her eyes opened a fraction.

“You believed I was dead,” she said.

Then the doors shut.

The wedding guests were separated for questioning. White roses lay crushed beneath the shoes of people who had come to celebrate a marriage that would never happen.

Olivia stood beside the ruined wall. Daniel approached her.

“Where did you hear her?”

“Behind the panel in the service corridor. The flower wall was built over an old maintenance recess. I was checking the lighting cables when I heard tapping.”

“Why didn't you tell security?”

“I did. They said the wall was solid.”

“Who told you to stop asking?”

Olivia hesitated. “Miss Cole.”

Richard returned from the ambulance entrance. The polished billionaire who had greeted five hundred guests was gone. In his place stood a man who had discovered that fourteen months of his life had been built on a lie.

He looked at Olivia.

“Tell me everything. From the beginning.”

May you like

She swallowed.

“Then you need to know what happened the night your wife disappeared.”
