Chapter 10 - THE PLACE WHERE HE LEARNED TO STAND

Nathan did not panic.

He wanted to. Every instinct demanded that he tear the city apart until Claire and Lily were found. But he knew that was exactly what the people threatening them wanted.

He called the police.

He called the investigators handling Grant's case.

He called Matteo.

Then he studied the package again.

The stone had been wrapped in a page from a children's coloring book. Lily had drawn a purple rabbit beside a blue house. In the corner, she had written three uneven letters:

LAKE.

Nathan remembered the place immediately.

A small lakeside cabin owned by his late mother. It had been sold years ago, but the new owners had left the old boathouse standing.

Matteo checked the location with local authorities. A patrol car was already on its way.

Nathan went with them.

Claire and Lily were inside the cabin. A man had forced them into a vehicle outside the apartment, but a traffic stop had interrupted the plan. The driver fled into the woods. The second man had locked them in the cabin while he went to find another car.

Lily had hidden the key beneath a loose floorboard.

When Nathan entered, Claire was holding her daughter close.

“Are you hurt?”

“No,” Claire whispered.

Lily ran to him.

“You came.”

Nathan lowered himself as far as he could in the chair and held her.

“Of course I came.”

“Did you bring my rabbit?”

He looked at the stuffed toy in her hand.

“You brought him.”

Lily nodded solemnly. “He was scared.”

Nathan laughed, though his eyes were wet.

The attacker was caught before dawn. The evidence connected him to one of Vane's remaining lieutenants. With Grant in custody and Vane's network under investigation, the threats began to weaken.

Months passed.

Grant pleaded not guilty, then changed his plea when the original dispatch recordings and payment records were introduced. Owen Mercer testified. Elise accepted responsibility for her role and cooperated with investigators. The men who had planted the cash in Claire's locker were dismissed and charged.

Nathan did not return to the life he had led before the ambush.

He sold the properties used for illegal operations and separated the legitimate companies from the old network. The process cost him money, allies, and influence. It also gave him something he had not expected.

Quiet.

He began attending physical therapy again, not because he believed he would walk, but because he wanted to remain as strong and independent as possible. Some days were painful. Some days he was angry. He stopped pretending otherwise.

Claire accepted a position managing the mansion's household staff under a formal contract. She insisted on written hours, transparent payroll, and a policy that no employee could be searched without documented cause.

Nathan agreed to every condition.

Lily continued to visit his office.

She brought him drawings, stones, and occasionally cookies that had been crushed inside her backpack.

One afternoon, she climbed onto the chair beside him and studied his legs.

“Do they still hurt?”

“Sometimes.”

“Will they work again?”

Nathan looked at her.

“I don't know, sweetheart.”

Lily thought about that.

“That's okay. You can still come to my birthday.”

Nathan smiled.

“I wouldn't miss it.”

At her fourth birthday party, Lily wore a yellow dress and a paper crown. Nathan sat beside the garden table while Claire arranged the cake.

The guests sang.

Lily blew out her candles.

Then she carried a small plate to Nathan.

“Half for you.”

He looked at the cookie.

A red crayon mark covered its wrapper.

This time, the letters were different.

N + L.

Nathan smiled.

“What's that?”

“Me and you.”

He accepted the cookie.

Across the garden, Claire watched them. The fear had not vanished completely, and neither had the scars left by the past. But the house no longer felt like a place where everyone had to whisper.

Nathan had lost the use of his legs. He had lost a friend, a fiancée, and the empire he once believed he needed.

But he had learned that being loved was not the same as being feared.

May you like

And Lily, who had never been afraid of him, had given him the courage to become someone worth trusting.

THE END
