Chapter 9 - The Last Door

The Montenegro estate was no longer quiet when they returned.
Rocco had doubled the guards. Tessa had contacted the authorities and arranged for the recovered documents to be secured. Dante instructed the staff to remain in the main house until the north garden had been checked.
Flor refused to enter through the front doors.
“Stefano knows the house,” she said. “If he has been watching the estate, he may know we're back.”
Dante nodded. “We'll use the east entrance.”
Lívia carried Theo. The boy was exhausted from the journey, but he kept one hand wrapped around Flor's blue scarf.
The old chapel stood behind a line of cypress trees. Its stone walls were covered in ivy. The door was locked, but the key from Isabella's cabinet opened it.
Inside, dust floated in the pale light. A stone altar stood beneath a narrow window. Carved into its side was a flower.
Flor knelt and pressed the petals in a certain order.
A small compartment opened.
Inside were two envelopes, a sealed ledger, and a voice recorder.
Dante picked up the ledger.
It contained a list of transfers from the family trust to companies controlled by Stefano. Some entries were marked with dates that matched the months before Isabella's death. Others showed payments to security contractors and private investigators.
The voice recorder held a longer recording.
Isabella's voice was clear.
“Stefano, I have the documents. I know what you've done. You have taken money from Theo's trust and used the estate security budget to cover it.”
Stefano answered, “You should have left the accounts alone.”
“I am telling Dante.”
“You won't.”
There was a pause.
Then Isabella said, “If you touch my son, I will make sure everyone knows.”
A chair scraped.
Stefano's voice became low. “You have no idea what I am capable of.”
The recording ended with a crash and a scream.
Dante closed his eyes.
Rocco took the ledger and recorder. “We need to get these to the investigators.”
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Rocco moved to the chapel window. “Someone's at the east gate.”
Dante looked at Flor. “Stay with Theo.”
But Flor shook her head. “He should hear the truth from you, not from a stranger.”
Dante knelt beside his son.
“Stefano hurt your mother,” he said carefully. “Flor tried to protect you. You were very little, and you were scared. You didn't do anything wrong.”
Theo looked at him.
“Bad man?”
“Yes.”
“Ring?”
“Yes.”
Theo's lip trembled.
Dante held out his hand. “I won't let him hurt you.”
The boy reached for him.
It was the first time Theo had willingly gone into his father's arms in months.
Rocco's phone vibrated. He read the message and looked up.
“Stefano is at the front entrance. He says he wants to speak with you.”
Dante stood.
“He can speak to the authorities.”
“He says he has a warrant.”
Tessa called immediately. She had checked. No warrant had been issued.
“Do not let him inside,” she said. “The police are on their way.”
Dante nodded.
They returned to the main house through the garden. Stefano stood in the entrance hall, flanked by two men. His black ring shone beneath the chandelier.
He looked at Flor.
“So you finally came home.”
Flor held Theo's hand.
Stefano's gaze moved to the ledger in Rocco's possession.
“You have no idea what you're doing, Dante.”
“I know what you did to Isabella.”
Stefano's face hardened. “She was unstable.”
“She was protecting her son.”
“She was destroying the family.”
“You stole from a child.”
“I kept this family alive.”
“You killed my wife.”
Stefano's eyes flashed. “I did not mean to kill her.”
The words hung in the hall.
Lívia felt her breath catch.
Dante stepped forward. “Say that again.”
Stefano seemed to realize what he had admitted.
“I said nothing.”
“You said enough.”
One of Stefano's men moved toward Rocco. The guards raised their weapons, but Dante lifted a hand.
“No one fires.”
The front doors opened. Police officers entered with Tessa behind them. Stefano's expression changed.
“You called the police?” he said.
Dante did not look away. “You did.”
The officers separated the men and took possession of the ledger and recorder. Stefano was detained for questioning. His two companions were searched and escorted outside.
As he was led away, Stefano turned toward Theo.
“Your father is lying to you.”
Theo flinched.
Lívia stepped between them.
Dante's voice cut through the hall.
“Do not look at my son again.”
Stefano was taken outside.
The house fell silent.
Theo began to cry, but this time he did not scream. He reached for Lívia, then for Dante.
His father lifted him.
“I've got you,” Dante whispered.
Theo rested his head against his father's shoulder.
The last door had finally opened.
And the truth had walked out.
The police interview with Stefano took place the next morning. He denied intending to hurt Isabella and claimed that Flor had misunderstood the argument. He said the missing documents were business records and that he had moved them to protect the family from outside interference.
The investigators asked why he had arranged for the north-wing bell to be rewired.
Stefano said he had no knowledge of it.
They showed him the maintenance invoice. It had been approved by a company linked to his private security office.
He asked for a lawyer.
The officers also questioned the two men who had arrived with him at the estate. One admitted that Stefano had asked them to retrieve the ledger from the chapel if Dante found it. The other said he had been told to keep the household staff away from the north wing.
Rocco provided the security logs and the message found in the maintenance room. The records showed that someone had entered the estate grounds on three nights in the previous month, using an old service access code.
The code belonged to Stefano.
Dante watched the evidence being documented. He did not interrupt or threaten anyone. He let the investigators do their work.
When Stefano was taken away, he tried once more to speak to Theo.
The boy had been waiting in the library with Lívia and Flor. He heard his uncle's voice in the hall and began to tremble.
Lívia crouched beside him. “You are safe. You can stay here.”
Theo held her hand.
Dante entered the room and knelt. “You don't have to see him.”
Theo shook his head.
“Do you want me to stay?”
A small nod.
Dante sat beside him until the sound of the front doors closing faded.
Later, Theo asked, “Bad man gone?”
“For now, yes,” Dante said. “The police are taking care of it.”
“Come back?”
“We will keep you safe. And if you feel afraid, you can tell us.”
Theo thought about that, then leaned against his father.
For the first time, he did not hide when a door closed.

Theo thought about that, then leaned against his father.
For the first time, he did not hide when a door closed.
Before the officers left, Tessa gave Dante a copy of the initial evidence receipt. The ledger, recorder, and recovered letters were now formally in the investigators' custody. No one in the household could alter or remove them.
Dante signed the receipt and asked for a copy to be kept with the estate's independent records officer. He wanted a record of every step from that moment forward.
Lívia watched him sign. The man who had once relied on private loyalty and family authority was now insisting on outside oversight.
It would not undo what had happened to Isabella. It would not erase Theo's memories. But it was a beginning built on something stronger than fear.
When Dante returned to the library, Theo was waiting with his drawing. He held it up.
“Daddy. Here.”
Dante took the paper carefully.
“I'm here,” he said.

Theo leaned against his leg.
For once, the boy did not need to point at the door.
