Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER'S LAST MOVE

Julian disappeared the same evening Vanessa gave her statement.

His apartment was empty. His car was found near the airport, abandoned with the keys inside. His passport had been used to book a private flight under a different name.

Detective Shaw issued an alert.

Adrian returned to Blackwood House with Daniel Price and two security officers. Emma came too, although Adrian had asked her to stay at the police station.

“I won't be hidden away because someone is dangerous,” she told him.

He did not argue.

The house had changed. The wheelchair still stood near the staircase, but it no longer looked like a symbol of helplessness. It looked like evidence of a performance that had nearly cost them everything.

Daniel entered the study with a laptop.

“We found a message Julian sent to the company secretary.”

Adrian read it.

If the board refuses the transfer, activate the contingency plan. The records must be destroyed before the police reach the archive.

“What contingency plan?”

Daniel opened another file.

A list of company storage locations appeared on the screen. One was a warehouse outside the city. Another was a private records facility. The final location was a small office registered to Northstar Safety Services.

Emma pointed at the screen.

“That's the contractor from my father's notebook.”

Adrian nodded.

“Julian is going after the remaining records.”

Detective Shaw was called immediately. Police teams were dispatched to the storage sites.

At the records facility, officers found several boxes already opened. A shredder was running in a back room. A man tried to escape through a side door but was stopped.

He was not Julian.

He was the company's former operations director, Peter Lang.

Lang had signed the warehouse inspection reports and later approved the contractor who serviced Adrian's car.

Detective Shaw questioned him at the station.

At first he denied everything. Then officers showed him the photographs from Peter's memory card and the payments made to his consulting company.

Lang asked for a lawyer.

Before the interview ended, he made one statement.

“Julian told me the accident would be enough. He said Adrian would never walk again, and the board would transfer control.”

“Did you know the car had been sabotaged?”

Lang looked at the table.

“I knew the brakes had been altered.”

“Who did it?”

“Northstar's mechanic.”

“Who ordered him?”

“Julian.”

“Was Vanessa involved?”

Lang shook his head. “She helped with the schedule. She didn't touch the car.”

“Who paid Northstar?”

“Julian's company account. But the money came from a trust controlled by Lionel Voss.”

Vanessa's father.

The same man who had signed the false medical statement.

That evening, Adrian received a call from an unknown number.

“Adrian,” Julian said.

Adrian signaled Daniel to trace the call.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you can't reach me.”

“Then why call?”

“Because I want you to stop.”

“Stop what?”

“The investigation. The board. The police. All of it.”

Adrian looked at Emma.

“It's too late.”

Julian laughed softly.

“You think you've won because you can stand?”

“I think I won when I stopped believing you.”

“You have no idea what Dad left behind.”

“I know what he left me. The truth.”

Julian's voice hardened.

“Dad was going to give me the company.”

“He didn't.”

“Because you were the perfect son.”

“No. Because you were stealing from it.”

Julian went silent.

Then he said, “You should ask Emma what her father took.”

Emma's face tightened.

Adrian glanced at her.

“What are you talking about?”

“Thomas Reed had a copy of the original inspection file. He stole it before the fire. He hid it somewhere. That's why we never found it.”

Emma stepped closer.

“My father didn't steal anything.”

“He took company property.”

“He was trying to preserve evidence.”

Julian laughed again.

“Ask her mother. She knows where it is.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at the tracing screen.

“We have a location. Near the old marina.”

Adrian stood.

“Let's go.”

Detective Shaw's voice came through Daniel's phone.

“Absolutely not. We have officers on the way. You stay where you are.”

Adrian looked at Emma.

Julian had mentioned her mother.

For the first time, Emma seemed afraid of what the next discovery might reveal.

***

An hour later, Emma called her mother.

Margaret Reed answered on the third ring.

“Emma? Is everything all right?”

“Did Dad hide something before he died?”

Silence.

“Where did you hear that?”

“Please, Mum.”

Her mother began to cry.

“He gave me a key. He said if anything happened to him, I should keep it safe.”

“Where is it?”

“In the tin box under my bed.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he said the Blackwoods would come looking for it.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“What does the key open?”

“I don't know. He told me never to use it unless someone from the family tried to silence you.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

“Julian has already tried.”

Her mother whispered, “Then you need to come home.”

After the call ended, Adrian asked Daniel to preserve the recording and provide it to Detective Shaw. He also asked that security check every entrance to the estate.

Emma stood by the window.

“Julian wants me frightened,” she said.

“He wants everyone frightened. It makes people easier to control.”

“Is that what he did to you?”

Adrian nodded. “He convinced me that my recovery had to remain a secret. Then he used the secret to make me feel alone.”

Emma turned toward him.

“You weren't alone. You just didn't let anyone stand beside you.”

The words hurt because they were true.

Adrian looked at the phone in his hand. “I won't do that again.”

“Good. Because if we are going to get through this, I need to know what is happening.”

He told her about the security contractor, the board motion, and the evidence recovered from Julian's office. He did not leave out the parts that frightened him.

When he finished, Emma sat beside him.

“Now we're facing it together,” she said.

While they waited for the police response, Adrian and Emma sat in the study with the doors open. Daniel had placed guards outside, but Adrian wanted no more locked rooms or whispered conversations.

He told Emma about the first anonymous message he had received after standing for the first time. He described the photograph taken through the rehabilitation room window and the warning that he should remain in the wheelchair.

“Why didn't you tell the police then?” she asked.

“I did tell my attorney. He said we needed evidence before making an accusation. I thought the threat might be an attempt to frighten me into revealing my recovery.”

“And you thought you could manage it alone.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at him for a long moment.

“You don't have to be invulnerable, Adrian.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I know that now.”

She moved closer and rested her head briefly against his shoulder. It was not forgiveness, not yet. But it was a beginning.

When Daniel returned with the tracing information, Adrian stood beside Emma rather than sending her away.

Whatever came next, she would hear it from him.

Margaret's call remained on Emma's mind. She worried that her mother might be in danger, and Adrian understood.

“Daniel can arrange for her to stay somewhere secure,” he said.

“I don't want her to feel like a prisoner.”

“She won't. We'll explain the options and let her decide.”

They called Margaret together. Daniel offered a temporary security detail and a safe apartment near Emma's sister. Margaret accepted the apartment but refused a guard inside the building.

“I have spent enough years being frightened,” she said. “I want to choose how I live now.”

Adrian respected that.

He also asked the police to preserve the messages Julian had sent to Margaret. The messages could establish that Julian had attempted to pressure a witness.

Later, Emma sat with her mother on a video call. They spoke about ordinary things for nearly an hour before discussing the case again.

Adrian listened from the doorway.

For once, the conversation was not about the Blackwoods. It was about two women trying to recover a life that had been interrupted by someone else's greed.

Before the officers left the estate, Daniel checked the perimeter cameras and found that one had been disabled for eleven minutes. The timing matched Julian's call.

The footage from the neighboring camera showed a dark vehicle leaving through the east gate. Police traced its registration to a rental company.

Detective Shaw added the information to the search file.

Adrian watched the officers work. Julian had spent years believing the estate belonged to him. Now every gate, camera, and locked room was being examined by people who answered to the law rather than the family.

The change was overdue.

Emma watched the gate close behind the last police vehicle. For the first time, the silence in the house did not feel like a warning.
