Chapter 8 - THE NAME ON THE FILE

The clinic had closed two years earlier.
Its former administrator, a woman named Margaret Ellis, now lived in a small house outside Trenton. She refused to answer the door until Daniel showed her a photograph of Isabella.
Then she began to cry.
“I wondered when someone would come,” she said.
Lucas arrived an hour later.
Margaret led them into a sitting room filled with old medical books and family photographs. She brought out a sealed envelope from a locked drawer.
“Victor Romano brought a little boy here after the accident,” she said. “He told us the child had no family. He paid for treatment and asked us to use another name.”
Lucas's hands tightened.
“What name?”
“Ethan Cole.”
Lucas stared at her.
“My son's name is Daniel.”
“I know that now.”
Margaret opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph of a small boy lying in a hospital bed. A scar crossed his forehead. His hair was dark, and his eyes were unmistakably Lucas's.
Lucas reached for the photograph.
His fingers trembled.
“Where is he?”
Margaret looked down.
“He was transferred after six months. Victor said a relative had taken custody.”
“Who?”
“I don't know. I was told not to ask.”
Daniel placed a second photograph on the table.
It showed a woman leaving the clinic with a child in her arms.
Margaret stared at it.
“That's the woman who came with Victor. She said she was the boy's aunt.”
Lucas looked at the photograph.
He recognized the woman.
Celia Moretti.
His father's younger sister, who had supposedly moved to Europe years earlier.
“She was involved,” he whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“I'm sorry.”
Lucas stood so abruptly that the chair tipped backward.
Daniel caught his arm.
“Lucas. We need to do this carefully.”
“My son is alive.”
“We're going to find him.”
Lucas looked at Margaret again.
“Did he know who he was?”
“I don't think so. He was very young. He asked for his mother every night.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
For three years, he had believed his son was dead.
For three years, Daniel might have been calling for him from somewhere he could not reach.
The investigation moved quickly after that. Financial records showed regular payments from a company controlled by Victor to a residential school in upstate New York. The payments had stopped six months earlier.
Daniel obtained the school's records through the authorities.
One child had been enrolled under the name Ethan Cole.
Age: eight.
Emergency contact: Celia Moretti.
The photograph attached to the file showed a boy with dark hair, gray-blue eyes, and a small scar above his eyebrow.
Lucas sat down.
“That's him.”
Daniel put a hand on his shoulder.
“Then let's bring him home.”
Before they could leave, Lucas received a call from Victor.
“Boss,” the lieutenant said. “I heard you've been asking questions.”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“Have I?”
“You should be resting. The family is unsettled.”
“Where are you?”
“At the mansion.”
“Stay there.”
Victor paused.
“Of course.”
Lucas ended the call.
Daniel checked his weapon.
“Do you think he knows?”
“He knows enough.”
“Then we need to move fast.”
May you like
Lucas looked once more at his son's photograph.
“Not before we get Daniel.”
