Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY AT THE TABLE

The secure-room door opened.

Isabella stood immediately.

“Lucas!”

He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Daniel stood beside the couch, holding Lily's red toy truck. Elena was seated nearby, one arm around Lily.

“Daddy?” Daniel asked.

Lucas released Isabella and knelt.

“I'm here.”

Daniel approached slowly.

“Did you catch the bad man?”

“Yes.”

“Is he coming back?”

“No.”

The boy looked down.

“Are we going to stay here?”

Lucas looked at Isabella.

“Not if your mother wants to go home.”

Isabella's eyes filled.

“I want to go home.”

Lucas took her hand.

“Then we'll go home.”

Lily stepped forward.

“Is the bad man gone?”

“He is,” Lucas said.

“Good.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Do you want to see my red truck?”

Daniel nodded.

The children sat on the rug and began pushing the truck between them.

Elena watched them.

“I should take Lily back to the staff quarters.”

Lucas shook his head.

“Not tonight.”

“Sir?”

“You and Lily will stay in the family wing. You will be paid for every hour you've worked, and your employment will continue if you want it. If you decide to leave, I'll provide a reference and enough money to move somewhere safe.”

Elena looked startled.

“Why?”

“Because you have been working hard to give your daughter a safe life. I won't make that harder.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Thank you.”

Isabella approached Elena.

“I hope you'll stay. The children seem to like each other.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Lily has already decided Daniel needs to learn how to build a truck garage.”

Daniel looked up.

“I do?”

Lily nodded.

“Yes. Your truck needs a house.”

For the first time, Daniel laughed.

The sound seemed to move through the room like sunlight.

The following weeks were difficult.

Victor was charged with conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, and multiple financial crimes. The investigation expanded beyond the Moretti organization. Lucas provided records that exposed the shell companies and the people who had helped Victor hide Isabella and Daniel.

Several businesses were closed.

Some properties were surrendered.

The docks were placed under new management.

Lucas did not pretend the process would be easy. He knew there would be consequences for the crimes committed under his family's name.

But he no longer intended to protect the empire at the expense of the people inside it.

Isabella began physical therapy for the injuries she had suffered in the fire. Daniel returned to school with help from a counselor. He had nightmares and sometimes refused to sleep unless the hallway light remained on.

Lucas never complained.

He sat beside his son until the nightmares passed.

He learned to make breakfast again. He learned that Daniel no longer liked the truck-shaped pancakes he used to request. He learned that Lily preferred strawberries cut into tiny hearts and that Elena took her coffee without sugar.

Small things.

Ordinary things.

The things he had once believed were beyond his reach.

One evening, Isabella found him in the music room.

He was sitting at the piano, looking at the sheet music.

“Are you going to play?” she asked.

“I don't remember how.”

She sat beside him.

“Then we'll remember together.”

She placed his fingers over the keys.

A quiet melody filled the room.

Daniel appeared in the doorway. Lily stood beside him.

“That's Mommy's song,” Daniel whispered.

Isabella smiled.

“Yes.”

Lily climbed onto the bench.

“Can I play too?”

Isabella moved aside.

“Of course.”

The melody became uneven and cheerful as small fingers pressed the keys.

Lucas watched his family.

For three years, he had believed the house had been emptied of everything worth saving.

He had been wrong.
