Chapter 7 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL

The investigation widened after Julian’s arrest.
Forensic accountants traced the Delaware consulting payments to accounts
controlled by Julian and a former executive named Peter Shaw. The
payments had been disguised as legal fees, acquisition research, and
risk assessments.
The documents showed a long-running plan to move valuable company assets
into private entities before the merger closed.
But there was another discovery.
The hidden camera had not been installed by a security contractor.
It had been purchased by Peter Shaw and delivered to the estate under a
false equipment order. Shaw had intended to record Alejandro signing the
expanded emergency authorization. If Alejandro had died, the footage
could have been destroyed. If he had survived but remained
incapacitated, Julian planned to use the document and the board
resolution to seize control.
The camera had captured the wrong thing.
It had captured the crime.
Detective Park explained the evidence to Alejandro in his study.
“We believe the plan had several stages. First, create a medical
emergency. Then present the emergency authorization as if you had
approved it. Finally, use the board vote to transfer operational
control.”
“Who else knew?”
“We’re still investigating. The evidence points to Julian and Shaw. We
haven’t found proof that other directors were involved.”
Alejandro nodded.
“Don’t stop at the people whose names are on the documents.”
The detective looked at him.
“Are you suggesting there are more?”
“I’m saying Julian couldn’t move money through the company without
help.”
That afternoon, Naomi discovered that one of the board directors had
approved the consulting invoices without reviewing the underlying
contracts. Another had received an undisclosed payment from a
subsidiary.
The board suspended both directors pending investigation.
Meanwhile, Sofia and Emma remained in the secure guest suite. Sofia
wanted to leave the estate, but Alejandro asked to speak with her first.
“You and Emma should never have been placed in danger,” he said. “I can
arrange a safe apartment and independent legal advice. You don’t have to
stay here.”
Sofia hesitated.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because my employee and her child were threatened in my home. Because
Emma saved my life. And because I won’t allow anyone to use your
financial situation to silence you.”
“I don’t want charity.”
“Then don’t accept charity. Accept what you are owed. Your wages, your
housing allowance, and compensation for the suspension. Naomi will put
everything in writing.”
Sofia studied him.
“And Emma?”
“She deserves a childhood, not a security detail.”
Alejandro looked toward the little girl, who was coloring at the far end
of the room.

“I can’t undo what happened. But I can make sure she is safe.”
Sofia finally nodded.
