Chapter 9 - THE PERSON HE TRUSTED

Adrian read Emma's name twice.

It was impossible. She had been working in the house for months before the crash, but she had never been part of the executive team. She had no reason to know his route schedule.

Miles explained that the access record might refer to a temporary account created for household staff. The account had been used once to download the schedule, then deleted.

“Could someone have used her credentials?” Adrian asked.

“Possibly.”

Adrian found Emma in the conservatory. She was sitting beside the windows with a cup of tea, looking out at the garden.

“Did you access my route schedule before the accident?”

Her face changed.

“No.”

“Your name is on the access record.”

“I never had access to that schedule.”

“Someone used your account.”

Emma set down the cup. “Then someone stole my password.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know.”

Adrian watched her carefully. He hated that suspicion had entered the space between them. He also knew he could not ignore evidence because he wanted to believe her.

Emma stood. “Do you think I helped them?”

“I don't know.”

Her eyes filled, but she did not look away. “I stayed when you were at your worst. I sat beside you when you couldn't sleep. I fought for you when doctors talked over you. And now you look at me like I'm a suspect.”

“I have to investigate every lead.”

“Then investigate. But don't pretend this is only business.”

She walked out.

Miles later discovered that Emma's staff account had been accessed from a terminal in the executive office. The login had been made using her password, but the terminal's camera showed Walter entering the room at the same time.

Walter had been arrested, but investigators were still searching his office. The account had been used to make the download look like it came from Emma.

Adrian called her immediately. She did not answer.

He went to her apartment that evening. Her neighbor said she had left for the train station with a suitcase.

Adrian found a note under his door.

I need time away from this house and from your secrets. Please don't send anyone after me.

He read it, then folded it carefully.

For the first time, he understood that Emma was not something he could protect by controlling where she went. If he wanted her to return, it had to be her decision.

The next morning, he gave the investigators the evidence clearing her account. He also asked them to confirm that no charges would be pursued against her.

Then he did something he had avoided for months: he went to the hospital where Thomas had been treated.

Thomas's widow, Rachel, agreed to meet him. She had two children and a small house outside the city. Adrian had paid the family support after the crash, but he had never found the courage to visit.

Rachel received him in the kitchen.

“I wondered when you'd come,” she said.

Adrian apologized. He told her the truth about Julian, the tampered car, and the second impact.

Rachel listened with both hands around a mug.

“Thomas loved you,” she said. “He talked about you like a brother. He would want you to stop blaming yourself for surviving.”

Adrian could not speak.

Rachel showed him a photograph of Thomas with his children at the beach. On the back, Thomas had written: One day off. No phones. No emergencies.

Adrian left the house with the photograph in his pocket.

That evening, he sent Emma one message.

I found the evidence that clears your name. I won't ask you to come back. I only wanted you to know I believe you.

May you like

She did not reply.

But for the first time, Adrian did not send another message.
