Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT

Gordon Pike agreed to cooperate.

He admitted that he had disabled the service corridor camera before the engagement dinner and damaged the wheelchair's brake mechanism. He claimed Vanessa had instructed him to make Adrian “look unstable” in front of the guests. He also admitted that Charles had arranged the original payment to the driver who caused Adrian's crash.

But Pike insisted he had not intended to kill Emma.

That distinction did little to comfort her.

The evidence was enough for investigators to obtain warrants. Charles's offices were searched. Vanessa's accounts were frozen. The board postponed its vote on Adrian's leadership.

For two days, the Blackwood mansion was surrounded by security.

On the third night, the power failed.

Emma was in the kitchen when every light went out at once. The refrigerator stopped humming. The hallway cameras went dark. Somewhere upstairs, a door slammed.

She reached for her phone.

No signal.

Then she heard footsteps.

“Daniel?” she called.

No answer.

A hand covered her mouth.

She struggled, elbowing backward, but someone grabbed her wrists. A cloth pressed against her face. She smelled something sharp and chemical.

The last thing she heard before the room went dark was a man's voice.

“Charles wants the notebook.”

When Emma woke, she was sitting in a cold room with her wrists tied to a metal chair.

A single bulb hung overhead.

Vanessa stood in front of her.

She wore a black coat and had her hair pulled tightly back. Without the gowns and polished smiles, she looked older, harder, and far more frightened.

“You should have stayed out of this,” Vanessa said.

Emma tested the rope around her wrists. “You should have stayed away from a three-story staircase.”

Vanessa slapped her.

Emma's head turned, but she did not cry out.

“You think you're clever,” Vanessa said. “You think Adrian is going to choose you over his family?”

“He already chose the truth.”

Vanessa laughed. “Men like Adrian don't choose truth. They choose power.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

The question struck a nerve.

Vanessa stepped closer. “Because you have no idea what he is capable of.”

“I know what you are capable of.”

Vanessa's expression twisted.

She pulled a folded paper from her coat. “Sign this. It says you stole the notebook and altered the records. It says Adrian paid you to lie about his accident.”

Emma stared at the document.

“You're asking me to confess to something I didn't do.”

“I'm giving you a chance to walk away.”

“Like my father walked away?”

Vanessa's face changed.

Emma leaned forward as far as the ropes allowed. “You know he was innocent. You know he reported the danger. You helped cover it up.”

Vanessa's voice dropped. “Your father should have kept his mouth shut.”

Emma went cold.

There it was.

Not a denial. Not an excuse.

A confession.

The door behind Vanessa opened.

Charles Blackwood entered.

He was dressed in a dark overcoat, his expression calm. He looked at Emma as though she were an inconvenience.

“Miss Collins,” he said. “This could have been handled quietly.”

“You killed my father.”

Charles sighed. “Your father died in a workplace accident.”

“You ordered the repairs delayed.”

“I protected the company.”

“You protected yourself.”

He looked at Vanessa. “Did she sign?”

“Not yet.”

Charles walked closer. “You don't understand the world you're stepping into. Your father didn't. Adrian doesn't. The company employs thousands of people. One damaged platform, one report, one unfortunate death—”

“One human being,” Emma interrupted.

Charles's expression hardened.

He turned toward Vanessa. “Take the notebook.”

Vanessa searched Emma's coat pockets, then her bag. She found nothing.

“Where is it?”

Emma smiled faintly.

“Not with me.”

Charles struck the table with his palm.

“Where?”

“Somewhere you can't reach.”

That was not entirely true. The notebook was in police custody, but Charles did not need to know that.

He grabbed Emma's chin.

“Listen carefully. Adrian has already lost one life to this. He will lose the rest if he keeps fighting.”

A loud crash sounded outside.

Then a shout.

“Police! Open the door!”

Charles froze.

Vanessa stepped back.

The door burst inward. Daniel entered with two officers behind him.

Adrian was right behind them.

His eyes found Emma immediately.

He crossed the room and cut the ropes from her wrists.

“Are you hurt?”

Emma shook her head, then leaned into him.

He held her carefully, his arms shaking with anger and relief.

Charles tried to move toward the rear exit.

An officer blocked him.

Vanessa began to cry. “Adrian, please. I was scared.”

Adrian looked at her.

“So was Emma.”

He turned away.

For once, he did not need to say anything else.

The kidnappers had made one mistake. The mansion's backup system recorded the power failure even though the cameras went dark. Daniel's team traced the outage to a maintenance panel in the lower service hall. The panel had been opened with a master key assigned to Gordon Pike before his arrest.

That meant someone had kept a copy.

Daniel had warned Adrian that the security system was compromised, but the new system had not yet been installed. The family had been relying on temporary guards and manual checks. Charles knew the gaps.

While Emma sat tied to the chair, Adrian and Daniel had been tracking a second vehicle through the estate's perimeter cameras. A neighbor's security camera caught the sedan leaving the property. Its registration led to a rental company used by one of Vanessa's cousins.

The police reached the warehouse before Charles could move Emma again.

After the rescue, a paramedic examined her wrists and checked her breathing. She had a bruised cheek, a split lip, and a headache from the sedative cloth, but no serious injury. Adrian refused to leave the room until the doctor confirmed it.

When the paramedic finished, Emma touched his sleeve.

“You came.”

“Of course I came.”

“You could have been hurt.”

“So could you.”

She looked at him for a long moment. “I was scared.”

His face softened. “I know.”

“Not just of them. I was scared you wouldn't find me.”

Adrian lowered his head. The confession struck him harder than any accusation.

“I should never have let you become a target.”

“You didn't make Charles evil. But you did keep me uninformed. Don't confuse those things.”

“I won't.”

He helped her stand, but waited until she was ready. Outside, the rain had stopped. Blue lights flashed against the warehouse walls. Charles was being placed in a police vehicle, his face blank. Vanessa sat in another car, staring straight ahead.

Emma looked at them.

“Do you think they'll ever admit what they did?”

“Maybe. But we don't need their confession to prove it.”

She leaned against him as they walked toward the ambulance.

For once, Adrian did not try to carry her or take over. He simply matched her pace.

In the ambulance, Emma's hands would not stop shaking. The paramedic wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and asked her to follow his finger with her eyes. Adrian sat opposite her, his own knuckles scraped from forcing open the warehouse door.

“Are you hurt?” she asked.

“Nothing serious.”

“You're bleeding.”

He glanced at his hand as though he had forgotten it existed. “It's a scratch.”

“Let the paramedic look at it.”

The paramedic gave Emma a grateful look and cleaned Adrian's knuckles. For the first time that night, she almost smiled.

At the hospital, the doctor confirmed that Emma had no serious effects from the sedative but recommended observation. Adrian stayed in the chair beside her bed. He did not touch her while she slept, though he kept his eyes on the monitor and the door.

Near dawn, Emma woke.

“You're still here.”

“Yes.”

“You should go home.”

“I will when you're discharged.”

She looked at his injured hand. “You got hurt.”

“So did you.”

“That's not an answer.”

He smiled faintly. “I know.”

She reached out and touched the bandage on his knuckles. “I don't want you to die trying to prove something.”

“I wasn't trying to prove anything.”

“Good. Because I don't need a hero. I need someone who tells the truth and comes home.”

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.

“I can try to be that man.”

“Trying is a start.”

When the doctor returned, Adrian stepped aside and let Emma answer every question herself. It was a small gesture, but she noticed it.

Outside the room, Daniel informed him that Charles and Vanessa were being held for questioning and that the police had recovered the backup key used to enter the mansion.

Adrian nodded.

May you like

“Preserve it. I want every person who handled it identified.”

The night had nearly cost him Emma. He would not let the investigation become an excuse for another careless shortcut.
