Chapter 8 - THE SECOND RECORDING

The police investigation uncovered another camera.

It had been installed in the hallway smoke detector, but the footage was not stored on the house system. It had been transmitted to a cloud account registered under Peter's name.

The camera had recorded the staircase for eleven days.

The fall was not the only incident.

Three days before it happened, Vanessa had approached my wheelchair while I was asleep in the living room. She released the brake and rolled the chair several inches toward the edge of the rug.

Rosa entered the room before anything happened.

Vanessa quickly stopped the chair and said she was adjusting it.

The recording showed her looking toward the camera.

She knew it was there.

Another clip showed Peter entering the house late at night with a small case.

He went into my study.

When he emerged, he carried a folder.

The police recovered the folder from his apartment.

It contained draft legal documents, copies of my medical records, and a typed statement claiming that I had become increasingly confused and unable to make decisions after my accident.

The statement was false.

It was also written in Vanessa's words.

But the most important recording was dated the night before the fall.

Vanessa stood in the hallway speaking to Peter on the phone.

“Tomorrow,” she said. “I need it to happen tomorrow.”

Peter's voice came through the speaker.

“What if the girl is there?”

“She'll be upstairs.”

“What if she sees?”

“She won't.”

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Then she said something that made Detective Morgan stop the recording.

“She trusts me. That's the whole point.”

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I could not speak.

The detective paused the video.

“Mr. Mercer, we have enough to request additional charges. But I want to ask you about something else.”

“What?”

“Vanessa's lawyer has suggested that she may claim you were suicidal after your accident and that she was trying to prevent you from harming yourself.”

I stared at her.

“That's a lie.”

“I know. The video shows otherwise. But we need to be prepared for that defense.”

I thought of the way Vanessa had told the paramedics I had tried to use the stairs.

She had not simply invented an excuse.

She had prepared a story.

A story in which I was unstable, confused, and dangerous to myself.

A story that could have taken my daughter away from me.

I looked at the paused image of Vanessa.

“Play it again.”

May you like

The detective did.

This time, I watched without looking away.
