Chapter 2 - THE FALSE DIVORCE

Adrian moved us into a private suite adjoining the ballroom. Two female

security officers stayed with Ellie while Daniel arranged for a family

lawyer and a police supervisor.

I didn’t want to let go of my daughter.

Ellie sat on the sofa with her pink shoes dangling above the floor. She

still wore the blue ribbon I had tied in her hair that morning.

“Mom, are we in trouble?” she whispered.

“No, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong.”

“Daddy said I shouldn’t tell you about the papers.”

“What papers?”

“The ones in his office. He said you were going to take all his money

and leave us.”

She explained that she had heard Ryan talking on the phone the night

before. He had said the transfer had to happen before midnight. After

that, I couldn’t come back, and everyone would believe I had stolen the

money.

“Did you see the papers, Ellie?”

She nodded and pulled out an old phone I had given her for emergencies.

She had taken a photograph of a printed page showing our house and my

name. Beneath it was a supposed divorce decree from Cook County.

Daniel checked the case number with the attorney. The answer came back

within minutes.

There was no such case.

The decree was fake.

Ryan had built his plan around pretending our marriage had ended.

The lawyer, Grace Holloway, examined the other documents. “This

signature is likely forged. We need the original records, but if the

bank transfer is pending, we should contact the financial institution

immediately.”

Adrian handed her the instructions. “Do it.”

Grace nodded. “We’ll preserve the evidence and request an emergency

freeze.”

Across the room, Isabella sat with her hands clasped tightly. Her veil

had slipped from its pins.

I asked what Ryan had threatened.

“He said he had evidence that my late mother’s foundation had paid for

something illegal. He told me that if I left him, he would give the

files to the press and make it look as if I had approved everything.”

“Had you?”

“No. I signed what he told me were routine partnership papers. I never

saw these transfer instructions until tonight.”

Adrian’s voice softened. “You should have come to me.”

“I thought I was protecting you. He said your enemies would use the

documents against the family.”

Ryan asked to speak with me. Grace advised against it, but I agreed to

hear him with the door open and security present.

“Melissa, listen to me. We can still fix this.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I was protecting our family.”

“You told our daughter I had abandoned her.”

“I was trying to prepare her.”

“You married another woman.”

His expression hardened. “You don’t understand what I had to do.”

For sixteen years, I had waited for him to admit that he had hurt me.

Now he was still explaining why I had made him do it.

“We are finished, Ryan,” I said. “Whatever happens next, you will not

use Ellie to control me again.”

His eyes narrowed. “You think Adrian will protect you forever?”

I glanced at the guard beside the door.

“I don’t need forever tonight. I need you to stop.” CHAPTER 3 — THE

MONEY UNDER THE HOUSE

The bank confirmed that the three-million-dollar transfer had been

scheduled but not completed. Grace sent a formal fraud alert, and the

financial institution froze it pending verification.

That should have been enough to make Ryan surrender.

It wasn’t.

Daniel returned with news from the Castellano accounting office. The

escrow account had paid legitimate construction expenses for months.

Then, over the previous six weeks, payments had been redirected to

Northstar Residential Holdings.

The company had no employees, no active projects, and no real business

address. Ryan was listed as its authorized manager.

Isabella’s name appeared on the incorporation papers as a director.

She stared at the copy. “He told me it was a charitable housing

project.”

Adrian studied the document. “Did you sign this?”

“I signed something at his office. He said it was for the wedding

foundation.”

Grace examined the signature. “It may be genuine, but the description of

the company is misleading. We need to determine whether she knowingly

approved the transactions.”

Daniel placed another page on the table. “Northstar also took out a loan

secured against a property in Melissa’s name.”

“Our house?” I asked.

He nodded.

The deed was not simply a transfer. Ryan had used my forged signature to

pledge our home as collateral. The loan proceeds had been routed through

Northstar and divided among several accounts.

“We’ve lived there for twelve years,” I whispered.

“I know,” Daniel said.

Grace explained that the mortgage documents could be challenged, but the

process would take time. The bank had to be notified, the signatures

examined, and the title protected.

“Will we lose the house?”

“Not tonight,” she replied. “We’ll file for an emergency injunction

first thing in the morning.”

Ellie had fallen asleep against my shoulder. I stroked her hair, trying

to keep my breathing steady.

Adrian watched us quietly. “You and Ellie can stay at my family’s guest

residence. It’s secure. You won’t have to return to the house until the

attorney says it’s safe.”

“I don’t want charity.”

“It’s not charity. Ryan used a company connected to my family to commit

fraud. I have a responsibility to make sure you’re safe while we

untangle it.”

I wanted to refuse. I had spent years making our money stretch and

telling myself I could manage everything. But Ellie stirred in my arms,

and I knew pride could wait.

“Just for tonight,” I said.

Adrian nodded.

Then Daniel’s phone rang. He listened, and his expression changed.

“Boss, the security system at the Mitchell house has been accessed.”

My heart lurched. “By Ryan?”

“We don’t know yet. Someone disabled the front camera and entered the

garage.”

Adrian stood. “Send a patrol. No one goes inside until the police

arrive.”

I looked down at my sleeping daughter.

Ryan had told me I wouldn’t be allowed home after midnight.

Now I understood why.

May you like

He wasn’t only trying to take the house. He was trying to erase whatever

he had left behind inside it.
