Chapter 9 - THE LAST ENVELOPE

Police arrested Patrick Vale at his apartment. Malcolm Cross was detained at the airport while attempting to leave the country.

Blythe was not at either location. Investigators believed she had gone to a property owned by her cousin.

Before she disappeared, she sent one final message to the hotel:

“If Nina wants to destroy me, I will make sure everyone knows what kind of woman she really is.”

The message included a scheduled social-media post containing the edited charity-event recording, photographs of my damaged coat, and a statement claiming I had attacked Blythe because she was marrying a man I wanted to control.

Our communications director prepared a factual response with the original video and the contract timeline. We would not insult Blythe or speculate about her motives. We would provide evidence.

Rosa then told me that a package addressed to Conrad had arrived at the front desk.

Inside was a velvet box, a USB drive, and a photograph of Conrad standing beside me at a company event.

The note read: “Ask him what he promised you.”

The drive contained an edited recording of Conrad and Blythe. The original file was also present. In the full recording, Conrad refused to approve a payment and threatened to report the false invoices. Blythe threatened to expose their relationship and claim that he had promised her a share of the hotel.

There was no evidence that he had made such a promise.

But there was evidence that he had allowed her to believe he could provide favors and access.

Conrad submitted his resignation. I accepted it.

“I know I failed you,” he said.

“You failed the hotel. You also failed the people who work here.”

“I am sorry.”

I believed he was sorry. I also believed consequences mattered.

After he left, Rosa told me that my words in the lobby had meant more to her than I knew. I thanked her and promised that the hotel would be different.

That evening, Detective Mercer called.

“Blythe has been located. She's at an airport hotel near O'Hare, preparing to leave under another name.”

“Is she in custody?”

“Yes.”

Then he asked a question I did not understand.

“Did your mother ever work for the Cross family?”

“No. Why?”

“We found an old photograph among Blythe's belongings. Your mother appears in it.”

I sat down.

The story was older than the champagne, older than Conrad, and older than the wedding.
