Chapter 10 - WHAT SOPHIA HAD BEEN TRYING TO SAY

The authorities arrested Dr. Voss two days later.

He initially denied everything.

Then investigators showed him the recording, the financial transfers, and the clinic notes Ruby had preserved. His confidence collapsed.

He admitted that Matteo had paid him to classify Sophia as nonresponsive and to discourage her from using signs.

He also admitted that he had removed Sophia's communication tablet after she typed a warning about Matteo.

The tablet had been stored in a locked cabinet at the clinic.

It was recovered.

The device contained messages Sophia had written over several months.

Most were ordinary.

I want to go home.

I want to see my brother.

Please tell Santiago I am not confused.

Then came the message dated two days after their mother's death.

Uncle Matteo put something in Mother's tea. I saw him. He told me if I spoke, Santiago would die too.

Santiago read it in the attorney's office.

He had to put the page down.

For seven years, his sister had carried that threat alone.

He went to the secure residence that evening.

Sophia was sitting at the kitchen table with Ruby, drawing a row of flowers.

He approached slowly.

“I read your messages.”

Sophia's pencil stopped.

“I should have read them years ago.”

She looked up.

He sat opposite her.

“I am sorry.”

Her hands moved.

Ruby watched, then translated.

“She says she doesn't want you to keep apologizing. She wants you to learn how to listen.”

Santiago nodded.

“I can do that.”

Sophia signed again.

Ruby smiled through tears.

“She says she wants to try speaking.”

Santiago froze.

“Speaking?”

Sophia nodded.

Her lips parted.

No sound came.

She closed her eyes and tried again.

A faint breath escaped.

Then a small, broken sound.

“San…”

Santiago's eyes filled instantly.

Sophia stopped, frightened by the effort.

Ruby gently touched her shoulder.

“You don't have to force it.”

Sophia took a breath.

“San… ti…”

The syllables were uneven and strained.

Santiago moved closer, but did not touch her until she reached for him.

“I'm here,” he whispered.

Sophia began to cry.

She had not lost the ability to speak because she was incapable of making sound. Fear, trauma, and years of being silenced had built a wall around her voice. The path forward would require professional care, patience, and time.

But that evening, she had chosen to try.

And that was enough.

Later, Santiago found Ruby on the back porch.

“Thank you.”

Ruby looked out at the garden.

“You don't owe me anything.”

“I know. I'm not offering a payment.”

“Good.”

He smiled faintly.

“I wanted to ask about Evan.”

Her face tightened.

“The investigators found the key from his accident report. It opened a storage locker rented by one of Matteo's companies. Inside were copies of transport logs and photographs Evan had taken.”

Ruby turned toward him.

“Then he really did find something.”

“Yes. His evidence helped prove Matteo's involvement.”

Ruby's eyes filled.

“He wasn't imagining it.”

“No.”

Santiago stood beside her.

“I can't bring him back. But I can make sure the truth about what happened to him is part of the case.”

Ruby nodded.

May you like

For three years, she had carried the weight of an unfinished promise.

Now, at least, Evan's name would no longer be buried beneath a false accident report.
