Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Vanessa did not leave quietly.

Within hours, her attorney contacted Luca's office. She claimed the household payments had been approved as part of her management duties and that the staff complaints were motivated by resentment.

The accountant prepared a detailed report showing which payments lacked supporting invoices. The family attorney advised Luca to preserve all records and let the investigation proceed.

Luca did not threaten Vanessa. He did not use his influence to make the matter disappear.

He removed her access to the household systems, ended her authority over staff schedules, and asked her to stay away from the mansion while the legal and financial review continued.

Vanessa refused at first.

“This is my home.”

“You can collect your personal belongings with your attorney present.”

“You're throwing me out because of a maid?”

“No. I'm ending your authority because you abused it.”

She stared at him.

“You'll regret humiliating me.”

Luca's expression did not change.

“I'm not the one who humiliated you.”

She left that afternoon.

The staff did not celebrate. They were too tired, and some were worried about what would happen next. Clara reminded everyone that the review was not over and that nobody should discuss confidential records with outsiders.

Hannah returned to her routine.

She stored Noah's milk in the staff refrigerator, labeled each bottle, and took her breaks at the agreed times. Luca made sure the policy was written down and given to every supervisor.

One evening, he found her preparing to leave.

“How is your mother?”

“Her hands are painful some mornings, but she's managing.”

“And Noah?”

“He smiled at me today when I came home.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“That's a good welcome.”

Hannah hesitated.

“Mr. Moretti, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Why did you let Vanessa manage everything if you didn't know what she was doing?”

He considered the question.

“I trusted her. And I was busy enough to mistake not being interrupted for everything being fine.”

Hannah nodded.

“My mother says that's how trouble gets into a house. Everyone is too tired to ask questions.”

Luca looked at her.

“Your mother sounds wise.”

“She is. She also says I should stop apologizing for having a baby.”

“That sounds wise, too.”

May you like

Hannah smiled.

For the first time since she had returned to work, she felt she could breathe.
