Chapter 9 - Giovanni Moves Again Because He Wants To

At seventy-six, Giovanni Moretti chose to leave the estate.

Lorenzo argued against it.

Of course.

The first-floor suite worked.

Care reliable.

Garden accessible.

Family nearby.

Why move?

Giovanni wrote:

TOO MUCH HOUSE.

Then:

TOO MANY PEOPLE WORK.

He had spent years living inside a machine.

Even corrected, the estate remained:

staff carts,

deliveries,

security,

events,

business dinners,

maintenance.

He wanted smaller.

Elena Ruiz arranged tours.

Not secretly.

Not as placement.

Three options:

accessible condominium with private care.

independent senior community with assisted services available.

small luxury residential community with nursing onsite.

Giovanni toured all.

He disliked condo:

too isolated.

He disliked luxury community:

“HOTEL DEATH.”

Elena told him not to write that in visitor book.

He laughed.

He liked independent senior community called Lakeshore Commons.

Apartment.

restaurant.

garden.

fitness.

onsite nurse.

optional aides through outside agency.

transport.

Not memory care.

Not nursing home.

He chose.

Lorenzo said:

“You have everything here.”

Giovanni wrote:

YES.

TOO MUCH.

Then:

I WANT NEIGHBORS NOT EMPLOYEES.

That ended argument.

Move.

What did he take?

Bed? No.

personal furniture.

books.

photographs.

small dining table.

communication tablet.

clothes.

The library suite stayed estate room.

No shrine.

Then staff.

Some were emotional.

Giovanni told:

No farewell gala.

Small lunch.

Then he left in ordinary accessible van.

Lorenzo drove separately.

At Lakeshore, residents did not all know who he was.

Some did.

One woman asked:

“Are you the restaurant Moretti?”

Giovanni typed:

ONE OF THEM.

Good.

Then he met neighbor Arthur Bell, retired school principal.

Arthur beat him at chess.

Giovanni hated.

They became friends.

No employee dynamic.

Then care.

Morning aide remained.

Evening aide shortened as independence improved.

Onsite nurse not his private nurse but available.

He joined speech group.

At first refused.

Then discovered another man with aphasia who swore creatively.

Stayed.

Then Lorenzo’s visits.

At estate, Lorenzo could walk downstairs anytime.

Now he had to visit.

Schedule.

That was healthier.

Sunday breakfast at Lakeshore dining room.

Giovanni chose pancakes.

Lorenzo complained.

“Your cardiologist?”

Giovanni typed:

NOT HERE.

Lorenzo laughed.

Then:

“Once a week.”

Giovanni typed:

MY PANCAKE.

Autonomy.

Then Dominic.

He visited Giovanni.

Their history?

Giovanni was Lorenzo’s father; Dominic? Wait in this story Giovanni is Lorenzo’s father. We haven't introduced Dominic. Sorry, Dominic belongs prior story; here Lorenzo's father is Giovanni. So no Dominic. Need avoid cross-universe bleed. Good catch! In current story, only Giovanni/Lorenzo. We've not introduced Dominic thankfully in current chapters. Great.

Then Margaret Gable.

She had no ongoing contact.

No need.

Then Nora.

At boutique hotel, she advanced.

Assistant manager for two years.

Then housekeeping manager at a larger property.

Not instant.

First year mistake:

she under-scheduled during convention because relied on average room-clean times, ignoring checkout mix.

Team exhausted.

rooms delayed.

Her director said:

“Numbers are not people, but they tell you how many people you need.”

Nora adjusted forecasting.

Then another issue:

a pregnant housekeeper asked for lighter cart.

Nora’s body remembered Margaret.

She almost approved everything informally.

HR said:

document accommodation properly so it survives manager changes.

They did.

The employee remained on work with:

lighter lifting,

more public-area assignments,

extra breaks.

No resentment? Some.

Nora explained only policy, not health details.

Then Nora became strict about off-clock work.

If staff helped guest after clock-out:

adjust time.

No “just finish the room.”

Because she remembered 4B.

Then one employee secretly stayed after shift to help an elderly long-term guest shower? Hotel staff shouldn't shower guests. She discovered.

The employee said:

“He has no one.”

Nora felt déjà vu.

She did not punish compassion first.

She stopped arrangement.

contacted guest and family/case manager with consent.

hotel arranged accessible resources list and external home-care support if guest wanted.

employee received coaching about scope.

No turning kindness into plan.

Then Lily.

At five, she started kindergarten.

Brody attended first-day pickup with Nora? They coordinated separately.

His parenting time stable:

alternate weekends daytime/overnights under agreement, one weekday dinner.

He paid support mostly.

He and Nora still disagreed.

School choice.

screen time.

whether five-year-old needed soccer.

Normal co-parenting.

Brody had become reliable enough that Nora no longer expected disappearance every week.

Trust did not become romance.

Then Lily asked:

“Why don’t Daddy and you live together?”

Nora answered:

“We’re your parents. We’re not a couple.”

Simple.

No poisoning child with abandonment story.

Later, age appropriate truth.

Then Giovanni sent birthday cards.

How did relationship persist after Nora left?

Occasional.

Once or twice a year.

She had consented.

He wrote:

LILY 5?

IMPOSSIBLE.

Nora sent photo only when comfortable.

No permanent access.

Then Lorenzo.

He saw Nora at industry event six years later.

Hotel group and Moretti restaurants shared hospitality conference.

Nora was now director of housekeeping at a downtown hotel.

Lorenzo recognized.

“Room 4B.”

She groaned.

“Please don’t call me that.”

He smiled.

“Sorry.”

Then:

“You did well.”

She answered:

“So did your father.”

He nodded.

No job offer.

No romantic spark.

He told:

Giovanni moved to Lakeshore.

plays chess.

still hates thickened drinks though no longer needs them.

Nora laughed.

Then Lorenzo asked:

“Do you ever regret leaving?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Good.

Then she asked:

“Do you regret letting me?”

He looked surprised.

“No.”

Then:

“I regret that I didn’t see what job had become before you had to.”

There.

Then conference moved on.

They returned to separate careers.

Three years after moving to Lakeshore, Giovanni had another small stroke.

This time staff recognized the change immediately:

new facial asymmetry,

worsened speech,

and a sudden decline in the strength of the side he had previously relied on most.

They called emergency services without debating whether he was “just tired.”

Called emergency.

no debate.

He recovered with some added deficits.

Then care needs increased.

Would he remain independent apartment?

He chose move within same community to assisted-living wing.

Not failure.

Continuity.

Lorenzo asked:

“Come back estate?”

Giovanni said:

“No.”

Clear.

Then:

“Why?”

He typed:

MY HOME HERE.

There.

Estate was no longer default family identity.

His healthcare directive already named Lorenzo, with an independent attorney as alternate.

After the new stroke, Giovanni reviewed the document with elder-law counsel and chose to keep that structure.

But instructions:

Use communication supports before determining I cannot decide.

Do not treat aphasia as incapacity.

Ask me first.

Important.

Then future feeding preferences and hospitalization documented.

No need detailed end-of-life yet.

Then he asked Nora? No.

Not her role.

Then one day a documentary producer contacted Nora:

We’re making a series about the Moretti crime family. We heard you cared for Giovanni in secret.

Nora declined.

Producer offered $15,000.

She thought about it.

Money useful.

But it would expose:

Giovanni’s bathing,

care failures,

Lily’s father,

Margaret.

Not hers alone.

She said no.

Then journalist used old sources anyway.

Nora could not control.

But she did not sell access.

Then Lily at age seven found old article online? Too young maybe.

A classmate’s parent mentioned.

Nora eventually told her:

“When you were in my belly, I worked for an older man who had trouble talking. Some people forgot to ask what he wanted. I helped him more than I should have, and later he got proper care.”

Lily asked:

“Was he a mafia boss?”

Nora groaned.

“People called him that.”

“Was he?”

“Adult answer.”

Good.

Then:

“Did he give us a mansion?”

“No.”

Lily looked disappointed.

Nora laughed.

Reality.

Giovanni moved because he wanted to.

Nora left because she wanted to.

Lily’s father returned because courts and time required actions, not because wealth forced him.

The most important movement in the story was not anyone being rescued.

It was people being allowed to leave roles that had started defining them.

Lorenzo struggled more with Giovanni’s move than he admitted.

The estate had been one of the few places where Lorenzo could convince himself his father was still under his protection.

At Lakeshore, strangers would help him dress.

cook for him.

notice if he fell.

Lorenzo visited the first week three times.

On the fourth day Giovanni typed:

GO WORK.

Lorenzo frowned.

“I own my schedule.”

Giovanni typed:

THEN OWN SOMEWHERE ELSE.

The nurse laughed before she could stop.

Lorenzo laughed too.

He left.

Then he called Elena Ruiz from the car.

“Is he actually okay?”

She answered:

“He is annoyed you visited four times.”

That was information.

Then Lorenzo reduced the visits.

No security guard was stationed outside the apartment.

The building already had security.

Lorenzo offered personal protection because of Giovanni’s old public profile.

Giovanni declined.

A current risk review found no specific threat.

So no guard.

Fear did not create entitlement to surveillance.

Then a resident posted a photograph of Giovanni online without asking.

Caption:

Guess who moved into my building—the old East Coast Don!

Lorenzo wanted lawyers.

Giovanni wanted the picture gone.

Management asked the resident.

She apologized and deleted it.

Enough.

Giovanni’s privacy did not require turning every annoyance into war.

Then Lakeshore invited him to resident council.

He refused at first.

Later he joined because the dining-room coffee was terrible.

His first successful proposal:

change coffee supplier.

Lorenzo said:

“You left an estate to become apartment politician.”

Giovanni typed:

POWER.

May you like

Then smiled.

Different kind.
