Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE FIRE

Vanessa Cross stood beside the carved marble fireplace and dropped a ribboned envelope directly onto the burning logs.

The paper caught almost at once.

Megan Rowe lunged forward, but Damon Sterling caught her forearm before she could reach the flames. His grip was firm without hurting her.

“Just rubbish,” Vanessa said smoothly. “Stop making a scene.”

The Christmas reception had been full of music a moment earlier. Now three dozen guests stood beneath the golden chandeliers, watching the fire.

Three-year-old Mila remained beside the burgundy velvet sofa. Her forest-green pinafore was slightly crooked, and the little red bow in her curls had slipped toward one ear.

She recognized the ribbon.

“Mommy money!” she cried. “Auntie burn!”

Megan felt the room tilt.

In the envelope had been the hospital's payment authorization, the final document required to reserve Mila's heart surgery. Without it, the operation scheduled for January would be postponed. The deposit had taken Megan two years to save.

She had wrapped the papers in the red ribbon because Mila liked red. It was the only pretty thing she could afford to add to the envelope.

Damon looked from the fire to Megan.

“What was that?”

Megan tried to speak, but her throat tightened. “My daughter's surgery money.”

Vanessa gave a small, dismissive laugh. “Sick children are expensive mistakes.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Damon slowly released Megan's arm. His expression did not change, but the temperature of the room seemed to fall.

“Repeat that.”

Vanessa's emerald earrings flashed as she lifted her chin. “I said what everyone is thinking. You cannot keep throwing money at every problem in this house.”

Megan lowered her eyes. She had learned that the safest response to wealthy people's cruelty was silence.

But Mila stepped out from beside the sofa.

“Mommy cry.”

Damon looked at the little girl. Then he removed a closed leather wallet from his jacket and placed it in Megan's hand.

“There's a black card inside. Call the hospital. Tell them the Sterling family will cover the entire cost, including recovery.”

Megan stared at him. “Sir, I can't—”

“You can.”

Vanessa moved between them. “Damon, don't be ridiculous. You don't even know what she's telling you.”

“I know what I heard.”

“It was an envelope. You can replace it.”

“Then why did you burn it?”

Vanessa's smile flickered.

Damon turned to his security chief. “Daniel, secure the fireplace. Photograph everything before anyone touches it. Find out who brought that envelope into this room.”

Vanessa's face hardened. “You are humiliating me in front of our guests.”

“No,” Damon replied. “You did that yourself.”

He crouched in front of Mila, bringing his eyes level with hers.

“Your mother is going to make a phone call. You stay with her. Nobody will take you anywhere.”

Mila nodded solemnly.

Then she pointed at Vanessa.

“She took it from Mommy's bag.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

May you like

Damon rose.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “we need to talk.”
