Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY NAME

The Caruso family council convened in a private room above the downtown offices. Vincent arrived with his attorney and the investigators' findings. Helena's seat was empty. Marco's name had been removed from the organization records pending the criminal case.
Several senior members objected.
“This is a family matter,” one man said. “It should stay inside the family.”
Vincent placed the medical records on the table.
“My wife was held captive in my home. My daughter was made to believe her mother was dead. This is not a private disagreement.”
Another man shifted. “Your sister says Elena was unstable.”
“My sister's claims are contradicted by medical evidence, security footage, and her own messages.”
“And what happens to the family trust?”
“It will be placed under independent administration, as my father intended.”
A murmur moved around the room.
“You would give control to outsiders?”
“I would give it to people who cannot use it to imprison my family.”
The oldest council member studied him. “Your father feared this day.”
“So did I. That's why I ignored the warning signs.”
Vincent signed the documents transferring oversight to an independent board. He also ordered a review of every company and account connected to Marco and Helena.
The decision cost him allies. It also ended the old arrangement that had allowed the family to hide crimes behind loyalty.
When Vincent returned home, Elena was in the kitchen with Clara, making cookies. Flour covered the counter. Clara had a streak of it across her nose.
“You're late,” Elena said.
“I know.”
“Did it go well?”
“I changed the trust structure. Some people won't like it.”
“Will it make us safer?”
“It will make it harder for anyone to use the family business to control us.”
Elena nodded.
Clara held up a misshapen cookie. “This one is for you, Daddy.”
Vincent accepted it. “It's perfect.”
“It's a star.”
“It is.”
“Mommy made the other ones because mine are lumpy.”
Elena laughed. Vincent looked at her. It was the first time he had heard that laugh without hearing the echo of the hidden passage behind it.
After Clara went to wash her hands, Elena spoke quietly.
“I don't want her growing up surrounded by men who think fear is respect.”
“Neither do I.”
“Then what happens to the family?”
Vincent considered the question. “Some parts will end. The legitimate businesses will continue under lawful management. Anything that depends on hurting people will be dismantled.”
“You can really do that?”
“I can begin.”
She studied him. “Then begin.”
May you like
He reached across the counter, palm open. Elena placed her hand in his.
It was not the old marriage returning. It was two people choosing, carefully, to build something different.
