Chapter 5 - THE LITTLE GIRL’S SECOND VIDEO

Lily woke just before noon.

She found her father in the sunroom, speaking with his attorney. The

little girl climbed onto the sofa beside him and rested her head against

his shoulder.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Are the bad people gone?”

Julian brushed her hair away from her face.

“Some of them are being questioned. The police are helping us.”

“Will Aunt Celeste come back?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily looked down at her hands.

“I don’t want her to come back.”

“She won’t be allowed near you.”

The little girl hesitated.

“I have another video.”

Julian turned.

“What video?”

“I made it yesterday. Before the party.”

She retrieved the tablet from the side table and opened a folder. There

were several short clips, most of them ordinary recordings of the house:

the Christmas lights, the dog sleeping near the fireplace, Nora carrying

laundry, and a few moments of Lily playing with her dolls.

Then she opened a clip recorded outside the library.

The camera showed Celeste speaking to a man in a gray suit.

The man handed her a small envelope.

Celeste said, “After tonight, the shares will be ours.”

The man replied, “What about Victoria?”

“She’ll be blamed. Everyone already thinks she’s after his money.”

“And the maid?”

“She’s disposable.”

Lily paused the video.

“That’s Nora.”

Julian felt his chest tighten.

The man in the gray suit was Richard Vale, the estate’s financial

director.

He had worked for Julian for twelve years.

Julian called his attorney.

“Find Richard Vale. Now.”

The attorney looked through his notes.

“He left the estate at eight this morning. He said he had a family

emergency.”

“Has anyone spoken to him?”

“No.”

Julian looked at the screen again.

“Get the police.”

Before the attorney could respond, a message appeared on Julian’s phone.

You should have signed the papers when you had the chance. The girl is

not safe.

Julian read it twice.

Victoria entered the room.

“What happened?”

He showed her the message.

Her face went pale.

“Lily.”

Julian immediately called for the security team. An officer escorted

Lily to a protected room while the estate’s cameras were checked.

The west garden camera showed a man entering through a side gate at

11:16 a.m. He wore a maintenance uniform and carried a tool bag.

The camera did not show him leaving.

The officer ordered the house locked down.

Nora was in the laundry room when she heard the alarm.

She stepped into the corridor and saw a man moving quickly toward the

west staircase.

He wore a maintenance uniform, but she recognized his shoes.

They were polished black leather.

Not work boots.

“Stop!” she shouted.

The man turned.

For a moment, they stared at each other.

Then he ran.

Nora followed, ignoring the pain in her arms. She reached the staircase

just as he pushed open the door to the upper hallway.

Two security officers intercepted him.

The tool bag fell.

Inside were a roll of adhesive tape, a small knife, and a folded paper

with Lily’s school schedule.

Julian was brought into the corridor.

“Who sent you?”

The man said nothing.

The officer searched his phone.

A recent message was visible.

Get the tablet. Make sure the child cannot show it to anyone.

The sender was saved under one letter.

C.

Celeste.

Julian looked toward his daughter.

The threat had not ended with the failed fall.

It had only become more desperate.

The officers asked Lily to explain how she had recorded the second video. She said she had been playing a game in the library and had left the tablet on a low shelf while she went to find her drawing pencils.

“I didn't know it was recording,” she admitted. “I pressed the button because I wanted to take a picture of the dog.”

Julian smiled faintly. “You accidentally became our best witness.”

Lily did not smile back. “Is that bad?”

“No, sweetheart. It means you helped us.”

“Will the police take my tablet?”

“They may need to make a copy of the video. You can keep the tablet.”

She looked relieved.

Victoria brought her a cup of warm milk. Lily held it with both hands.

“Can I ask something?” she whispered.

“Anything,” Victoria said.

“Did Aunt Celeste hate me?”

Victoria sat beside her. “I don't know what she felt. But what she did was wrong, and none of it was your fault.”

“She said Daddy was going to give you everything.”

Victoria glanced toward Julian. “I never asked him for anything.”

“I know,” Lily said. “I heard you tell him you didn't want the shares.”

Julian looked at his daughter. “You heard that?”

“I was outside your room.”

Victoria's eyes softened.

Lily continued, “I think Daddy wanted to give them to you because you stayed.”

Julian reached for her hand. “That is exactly why.”

The little girl leaned against him. “Then I want you to have them.”

Victoria shook her head. “This isn't something you need to decide.”

“But I know what I saw. You helped Daddy when he couldn't do things. You never shouted at him when he was sad. You helped me with my spelling.”

Julian kissed the top of her head. “Those are good reasons to love someone. But the company is an adult matter.”

A police officer entered and asked to speak with Julian. The man arrested in the west corridor had identified himself as Owen Price, a private investigator hired through a company connected to Celeste. He claimed he had only been sent to retrieve the tablet.

“Did he say who gave him the school schedule?” Julian asked.

“He said Richard Vale.”

Julian looked at Daniel. “Richard has access to every part of this house.”

Daniel nodded. “And he knows where the company records are kept.”

The officer said they had obtained a warrant to search Richard's apartment and office. They also wanted to move Lily to a secure location until the investigation was complete.

Julian refused to send her away without a plan. “She stays with me.”

“Sir, we need to reduce the risk.”

“Then increase security here. I will not make my daughter feel like she is being punished for telling the truth.”

The officer considered it, then agreed to arrange a protected room inside the estate.

As evening approached, Lily fell asleep again. Julian watched her for several minutes.

Victoria touched his shoulder. “You should rest.”

“I can't.”

“You need to.”

He looked at her. “Five years ago, I thought losing the use of my legs was the worst thing that could happen to me. Then I thought losing you would be worse. Now I know the worst thing is discovering that the people closest to you have been using your trust to put your daughter in danger.”

Victoria took his hand. “Not everyone betrayed you.”

“No,” he said. “Some people stood in front of a falling chair.”

He looked toward Nora, who was speaking quietly with the officers in the hall. “And some people were willing to bleed for a man they barely knew.”

The child specialist asked Lily whether she had been frightened when she recorded Celeste and Richard. Lily said she had been more confused than frightened.

“They were talking like they were planning a birthday surprise,” she explained. “But nobody was smiling.”

The specialist asked whether she had been told to keep secrets.

Lily nodded. “Aunt Celeste said it was a grown-up secret and I shouldn't tell Daddy.”

“What did you think?”

“I thought secrets were for presents. Not for hurting people.”

The specialist made a note and praised Lily for telling a trusted adult. Julian listened through the observation window. His eyes were wet, but he did not interrupt.

Afterward, Lily asked whether she could keep the videos in a special folder. Julian agreed, provided the original copies were preserved for the police. Daniel's technical team made a verified copy and stored it securely.

“Can I name the folder?” Lily asked.

“What would you call it?”

“Things I saw.”

Julian smiled. “That's a good name.”

Later, he asked Victoria to help him explain why the police needed the tablet. He wanted Lily to understand that the videos were evidence, not a burden she had to carry alone.

“You did your part,” he told her. “The adults will do theirs.”

Lily considered this. “Even the people who were supposed to protect you?”

“Especially them.”

She looked toward Nora, who was carefully sorting the clean linen brought back from the laundry. “Nora protected you.”

“Yes.”

“Can she come to my school show when I'm better?”

Nora looked up, surprised. “I'd love to.”

May you like

Lily smiled for the first time that day.

That small invitation changed the mood in the room. It reminded everyone that Lily was still a child who wanted ordinary things: school performances, pancakes, stories before bed. Celeste had tried to turn her into a witness and a weapon. Julian was determined to give her childhood back.
