Chapter 2 - THE WIDOW'S SECOND STORY

The paramedics carried Richard out through the side entrance. Daniel followed, refusing to let go of his father's hand until the ambulance doors closed.

Victoria climbed in beside him. Elena remained at the mansion with the police, still wearing her dirt-stained apron.

Margaret was taken to a separate vehicle for questioning.

At the hospital, doctors explained that Richard had been heavily sedated. His breathing had been dangerously shallow, and the hidden compartment had contained only a limited oxygen supply. Whoever placed him there had expected him to remain unconscious long enough for the funeral and burial.

“If he had been buried,” the physician said, “he would not have survived.”

Daniel sat beside the hospital bed, staring at his father.

“How did you know?” he asked when Richard was awake enough to speak.

Richard’s voice was faint. “I didn't know exactly what she planned. I knew she was preparing something.”

He explained that, three nights before his supposed death, Margaret had brought a doctor to the mansion. She said Richard was suffering from a dangerous heart condition and needed a new medication. After taking it, he became dizzy and struggled to breathe.

He remembered hearing Margaret speak to someone in the corridor.

“He's nearly ready,” she had said. “Make sure the paperwork is signed.”

Richard had managed to press the emergency call button beneath his bedside table. Elena had entered before Margaret returned. She found him barely conscious and helped him breathe until he could speak.

He told her about the false death plan, the hidden compartment, and the evidence he had stored beneath the coffin lining.

“Why didn't you call the police?” Daniel asked.

“I tried. My phone had been taken. The house cameras were disabled. Margaret controlled the staff, the doctor, and the funeral arrangements. I needed proof before she could claim I was confused.”

“You could have told me.”

Richard looked at his son with regret.

“She had people watching you. She said if I contacted you, she would make sure you were arrested for financial crimes she had prepared in your name.”

Daniel stood abruptly.

“What?”

Richard’s eyes filled with shame. “She had been moving money through the company for years. She had created documents that made it appear you approved the transfers.”

Victoria shook her head. “But why would she do that?”

“Because she wanted control of the estate,” Richard answered. “And because she believed my first daughter had a claim to it.”

Daniel looked again at the photograph.

“Lydia.”

Richard nodded.

“Your father and I were young when she was born,” he said. “Her mother, Anna, died shortly afterward. My family told me the baby had been placed with relatives. Then I was told she died in infancy.”

“Who told you?”

“Margaret.”

Richard explained that he had met Margaret years later. She had been a financial adviser to the family and had helped him manage the estate after a difficult business period. She had comforted him when he believed Lydia was gone. Eventually, they married.

For a long time, he had trusted her.

Then he discovered a payment made to a private agency under a false name. It led him to a photograph of a young woman who resembled Anna.

He had begun asking questions.

Margaret had noticed.

“She knew I was close to finding Lydia,” Richard whispered. “And she knew that if Lydia was alive, she could inherit part of the estate.”

Daniel felt cold.

“So she decided to kill you.”

May you like

Richard closed his eyes.

“I think she decided to make me disappear first. The rest depended on whether anyone questioned the funeral.”
