Chapter 6 - THE ACCOUNT UNDER ANOTHER NAME

The forged document led investigators to a network of accounts spread across three states.

For years, money had been transferred from the Harrington estate into companies owned by Margaret’s brother. Some of those funds were later moved into an account under the name Lydia Moore.

The account had never been used.

It was a trap.

Margaret had created a false financial trail that could make Lydia appear to be involved in the theft. If the young woman had ever challenged the estate, the forged release and the account history could have been used to discredit her.

But the records also contained something unexpected.

A payment to Dr. Price had been made from the same account two days before Richard collapsed.

Naomi obtained a warrant.

Dr. Price was arrested at his home. At first, he denied everything. Then investigators showed him the payment records and the messages recovered from Margaret’s phone.

He broke.

He admitted that Margaret had asked him to administer a powerful sedative disguised as heart medication. He claimed he believed Richard would remain unconscious for several hours while she arranged a transfer of assets.

But when Richard failed to wake, Margaret panicked.

“She said he had become a liability,” the doctor told investigators. “She told me the family would believe he had died naturally.”

“Did you know she intended to put him in a coffin?” Naomi asked.

Dr. Price looked down.

“I helped her write the death certificate.”

The confession sent shock waves through the family.

Daniel was furious. Victoria could barely speak. Richard listened from his hospital bed, his hands folded tightly over the blanket.

“Why?” he asked.

Naomi answered honestly.

“Money. Control. And fear that your firstborn daughter would expose the fraud.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I let her into my home.”

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“She made choices. You trusted her.”

Richard shook his head.

“I ignored signs. Elena told me the medication was wrong. I dismissed her because I believed Margaret.”

Elena, sitting near the window, quietly said, “You listened when it mattered.”

Richard looked at her.

“Not soon enough.”

Meanwhile, Lydia agreed to provide a statement and a handwriting sample. A forensic examiner confirmed that the signature on the inheritance release was forged.

The estate’s trustees froze the disputed accounts.

Investigators also found a second document in Margaret’s private safe: a draft petition to have Richard declared mentally incompetent. It was dated six months earlier and included a proposed guardianship arrangement that would give Margaret control of his property.

Daniel studied the document.

“She planned all of this before he got sick.”

Naomi nodded.

“It's possible the poisoning was the final step in a much longer scheme.”

That evening, Margaret finally requested to speak with Daniel.

He visited her in the interview room, with Naomi present.

Margaret looked tired, but her eyes were sharp.

“You've turned the whole family against me,” she said.

“You did that yourself.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You put my father in a coffin.”

Her face tightened.

“He was already dying.”

“He was alive.”

“He would have died eventually.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Is that your defense?”

Margaret leaned closer.

“You have no idea what it took to keep this family together. Your father was weak. He was obsessed with a woman who had been dead for years and a daughter he barely knew existed.”

“And you thought you deserved his estate?”

“I deserved what I built.”

“You built nothing. You stole it.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Ask Elena what she knows about your father’s first daughter.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Margaret smiled faintly.

“Ask her why she kept the photograph.”
