Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE BLUE FOLDER

Daniel had not heard his father's name spoken with fear in years.
Richard Whitmore had been a respected businessman, a generous donor, and a man whose portrait still hung in the lobby of the family company. He had also been dead for six years.
“My father?” Daniel repeated.
Olivia nodded.
“Before he died, I found documents showing that he had secretly transferred company assets into a private trust. The trust was supposed to protect the business if the family ever faced bankruptcy.”
“That sounds like estate planning.”
“It wasn't. The money came from accounts belonging to the employees' pension fund.”
Daniel went still.
“How much?”
“Twenty-four million dollars.”
Olivia explained that she had discovered the transfers while helping Daniel's father organize old company records. She had been a financial auditor before Lily was born and noticed that several accounts had been closed without proper authorization.
She confronted Richard. He told her to forget what she had seen.
A week later, she found a second set of documents showing Marcus moving money through shell companies.
“Marcus was working for my father?”
“Your father gave him access. Marcus was young, ambitious, and desperate to prove himself. Richard promised him a place at the top of the company.”
Daniel remembered the arguments that followed. Olivia had become frightened and secretive. She woke at night to check the locks. She accused Marcus of following her. Daniel had thought she was struggling with anxiety.
Then came the car accident.
Her vehicle had been found burned near a river. Richard was already dead, but Marcus had handled the investigation and arranged the funeral. Daniel had been told that Olivia's remains were too damaged for an open casket.
He had believed him.
“Who identified the body?” Daniel asked.
“Marcus arranged it.”
Daniel stood.
“I want the original records.”
“They're in a blue folder in your father's old office. The office you turned into a private archive.”
Daniel remembered the locked cabinet beneath the desk.
That night, with Olivia resting at the hospital and Lily asleep beside her, Daniel returned to the mansion with Detective Elena Ruiz.
He opened the cabinet.
Inside were old contracts, financial statements, and a blue folder tied with a black ribbon.
The first page was a transfer authorization signed by Richard.
The second carried Marcus's signature.
The third was a document that made Daniel's hands go cold: a draft agreement transferring controlling shares of Whitmore Holdings to an overseas company.
The final beneficiary was Vanessa Cole.
Daniel read the date.
Three weeks before Olivia's disappearance.
Detective Ruiz studied the page.
“Your fiancée was already connected to the company?”
Daniel nodded.
“And this isn't all.”
He turned to the last page.
A handwritten note from his father read:
Marcus will handle the wife. Vanessa will secure the marriage. Once Daniel signs the succession agreement, the trust can be liquidated.
Daniel stared at the words.

His father had planned to use his marriage as the final step in a financial scheme. Richard had died before it could happen, but Marcus and Vanessa had continued the plan.
Olivia had discovered it.
