Chapter 5 - THE SECOND BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Daniel's mother, Margaret Whitmore, had been dead for ten years. She had suffered a stroke when Daniel was twenty-six, and the family had always described her final years as a period of quiet illness.

But the second birth certificate suggested something else.

Detective Ruiz found the document tucked inside a sealed envelope at the bottom of the blue folder.

It listed a boy born in 1987.

Mother: Margaret Whitmore.

Father: Richard Whitmore.

Name: Marcus Reed.

Daniel read it twice.

Marcus was not simply his best friend.

He was his half-brother.

The date matched the year Richard had sent Margaret away to a private clinic for several months. Daniel had been told she was recovering from exhaustion.

Richard had arranged for the child to be raised by another family, providing money through a private trust.

Marcus had grown up believing his father was a wealthy businessman who occasionally helped his family. He discovered the truth in his twenties.

And Richard had promised him a share of the company.

Daniel sat down.

“All these years…”

Detective Ruiz nodded.

“Marcus likely believed the company should have been his.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because the secret gave him leverage. He could use it when he needed money or influence.”

Daniel looked at the birth certificate.

There was another document beneath it: a letter from Richard to Margaret.

If Daniel ever learns about the boy, tell him the truth. I have made arrangements. Marcus will receive what is fair when the time comes.

But Margaret had written a note in the margin.

He is not a share of the company. He is a child. You cannot buy your way out of being his father.

Daniel felt sick.

He called his mother's old attorney, who confirmed that Richard had changed the trust shortly before his death. Marcus was supposed to receive a substantial inheritance, but only after a full audit of the company.

The audit had never happened.

Marcus had used the false transfer documents to create his own claim.

Vanessa had been recruited because she had access to Daniel's personal life and could persuade him to sign the succession agreement.

A recording recovered from Vanessa's phone confirmed the plan.

“Once he signs, Marcus gets control,” Vanessa said. “I get the house and the settlement. Olivia never has to come back.”

A man's voice answered.

“And Lily?”

“Daniel will keep her. I don't want a child. I want the life he promised me.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

There was more.

“If Olivia keeps talking, we use the old medical report. We tell everyone she has delusions. Nobody will believe a woman who was declared dead.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had nearly married a woman who intended to erase his daughter's mother.
