Chapter 7 - THE SILVER PIN

Claire had brought Nora to the estate after Detective Bennett assured her the building was secure.
I had not expected my daughter to come into the ballroom.
But there she was, standing near the entrance in a pale blue dress, holding a small silver pin.
Her face was white.
“Nora?”
She ran toward me.
“Daddy, we have to stop.”
I knelt.
“What's wrong?”
She looked past me toward Vanessa.
“She's going to make you disappear.”
Vanessa appeared behind her.
“Ethan, I'm sorry. She slipped away from your sister.”
Nora stepped in front of me.
“Don't let her sign the papers!”
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Sweetheart, go with Aunt Claire.”
“No!”
The guests had begun watching.
I tried to take Nora's hand, but she held up the silver pin.
“Daddy, if I don't do this now, you might lose Mommy forever.”
I didn't understand.
“What are you talking about?”
Nora looked at Vanessa's stomach.
“Grace isn't inside.”
The words cut through the room.
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“This is ridiculous. Ethan, she's upset.”
Nora took a breath.
“She isn't pregnant. I heard her and Adrian. They said the baby was fake.”
A murmur spread through the guests.
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“Give me that.”
Nora backed away.
I reached for my daughter.
“Sweetheart, don't move.”
But Nora was already crying.
“She said you had to sign before five. She said after that, we wouldn't be a family anymore.”
Vanessa grabbed for the pin.
Nora twisted away and drove its sharp point into the rounded fabric over Vanessa's stomach.
A small pop sounded.
The belly collapsed.
Not slowly.
Not like a real pregnancy.
The rounded shape folded inward beneath the gown, revealing a soft silicone shell that slipped down around Vanessa's waist.
The ballroom went silent.
Vanessa stared at her stomach.
Then at Nora.
Then at me.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I felt as though the air had been removed from the room.
There was no baby.
There had never been a baby.
Nora had not stabbed Vanessa. The pin had pierced the prosthetic belly, and the material beneath it was intact. But the sight of the collapsed shape made the truth impossible to deny.
I stood.
“Call the police.”
Vanessa's face changed.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“No.”
“It's not what you think.”
I looked at the fake belly.
“Then tell me what it is.”
She reached for my arm.
I stepped away.
Adrian appeared near the back of the room and started toward the exit.
Detective Bennett moved immediately.
“Adrian Shaw! Stop!”
He ran.
Two officers caught him before he reached the doors.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You said this wouldn't happen!”
The words echoed through the ballroom.
I stared at her.
“What wouldn't happen?”
She covered her mouth.
Nora clutched my jacket.
“Daddy, play the recording.”
I looked down.
She had brought the small silver recorder.
I took it from her trembling hand and connected it to the venue's sound system.
The first voice was Adrian's.
“Friday is the deadline. If he signs the transfer, we can finish everything.”
Then Vanessa.
“He'll sign. He trusts me.”
The ballroom listened.
The recording continued.
“And the child?”
“There's no child. Not really. There never was.”
Someone gasped.
Then Adrian's voice came again.
“Once the insurance paperwork is done, the accident will look convincing. He'll be gone, the trust will be under your control, and Nora will be placed with the people we discussed.”
Vanessa shouted, “Turn it off!”
But the recording kept playing.
“Friday at five,” Adrian said. “No delays.”
The room erupted.
I looked at my daughter.

She had exposed the lie that had nearly destroyed our family.
And now I understood why she had been so frightened.
