Chapter 1 - THE OPENING (PROVIDED BY THE READER)

Dad wanted Christmas to be all about my stepbrother’s promotion, so he asked me to stay away—then a blizzard turned my quiet Christmas Eve into something nobody expected.

My father told me not to come home for Christmas because my Army career might “steal the spotlight” from my stepbrother’s promotion. I canceled my flight without arguing and volunteered for overnight duty instead, but hours later, everyone at Dad’s Christmas dinner was staring at the national news, finally discovering where I had really spent Christmas Eve.

“Don’t come home this year.”

Dad said it three nights before Christmas while I was locking my office at an Army base in Colorado.

“Jason will be here,” he continued. “People are going to ask about your deployments. Your rank. He just got promoted, and this Christmas is supposed to be his moment.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“So my presence at dinner is going to embarrass him?”

“You always take the attention away from him.”

For eighteen years, I had served without expecting my family to rearrange their lives around mine.

I had missed birthdays, funerals, holidays, and moments I would never get back.

Now my own father wanted me to disappear so his favorite son could feel more important.

“I understand,” I said.

I canceled the flight I had already paid for.

Then I volunteered for Christmas overnight duty.

“Major, my sister has an extra seat at her table,” Sergeant Alvarez told me.

“I’m staying.”

“Sir...”

“Half this unit has kids waiting for them at home.”

Because I stayed, two younger soldiers got to spend Christmas with their families.

That was enough for me.

Then the blizzard arrived.

By Christmas Eve, vehicles were buried along the interstate. Visibility had nearly vanished, and our unit was activated.
