Chapter 14 - THE MOTHER'S CONFESSION

We returned to the brownstone under security escort.

Charlotte was waiting in the library.

She sat on the sofa in a cream suit, her pearls perfectly arranged, as if she had come for tea rather than entered a secured property without permission.

When Graham walked in, she stood.

“Darling.”

“Don't.”

The single word stopped her.

Her eyes moved to me. “Audrey. I hope you haven't been frightened.”

I placed the deposit-box receipt on the desk.

“You opened my father's box six weeks ago.”

Charlotte's expression did not change, but her fingers tightened around her handbag.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

“Which family?” I asked. “Mine or yours?”

Graham stepped between us.

“Did you know Miles was alive?”

Charlotte looked at her son.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she sat down.

“Yes.”

Graham seemed to lose his balance, though he remained standing.

“You knew?”

“I helped him disappear.”

“Four years.”

“I had no choice.”

“You let me bury my brother.”

“You buried a coffin containing his belongings, Graham. You did not bury him.”

His voice dropped. “You let me believe he was dead.”

Charlotte's composure cracked.

“Everett had men watching the hospital. Miles had been injured, and the doctors believed he would not survive the night. When he woke, he told me what he had discovered. He said Everett had arranged the altered inspection report and that someone had deliberately removed a support brace from the platform.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you were already being watched. You had threatened to confront Everett. If he knew Miles was alive, he would have used you to find him.”

Graham stared at her.

“So you chose to make me grieve.”

“I chose to keep you alive.”

I stepped forward. “And my father?”

Charlotte looked at me.

“Your father helped Miles escape. He was supposed to keep the original records safe. When he refused to hand them over, Everett threatened his company.”

“He lost everything.”

“I know.”

“Did you help him?”

Charlotte lowered her eyes.

“I tried.”

“That isn't an answer.”

She looked up again. “I paid some of his debts. I arranged for his company to remain open long enough to protect the employees. But Everett found out. He threatened to expose your father's role in helping Miles. Your father refused to cooperate with him.”

I felt sick.

“Was my father's death an accident?”

Charlotte's silence lasted too long.

Graham moved closer. “Mother.”

“I don't know.”

“You knew enough to hide Miles. You knew enough to open that deposit box. Don't tell me you know nothing.”

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained controlled.

“Your father was investigating Everett's financial records. He planned to testify. Two years ago, he was driving home from a meeting when his car went off the road.”

I gripped the back of a chair.

“Are you saying Everett killed him?”

“I'm saying the brakes had been inspected three days earlier by a company connected to Everett.”

The room went silent.

Graham looked at his mother with a kind of pain I had never seen.

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I,” he said. “But I didn't get to choose what I was afraid of. You chose for me.”

Charlotte began to cry.

I wanted to hate her. Part of me did. But I could also see that she had spent four years protecting one secret by creating another, and the damage had spread through every person she claimed to love.

Graham turned toward the door.

“Where is Miles?”

Charlotte wiped her cheek.

“I don't know his exact location. He contacts me through an intermediary.”

“Then call him.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because he told me never to contact him unless the evidence was found.”

Graham held up the flash drive.

“We found it.”

Charlotte looked at the device.

May you like

For the first time, she appeared genuinely afraid.

“Then Everett will know too.”
