Chapter 4 - THE BLUE PHONE

We found Marco’s wife, Sofia, at her sister’s apartment in Astoria. She
was sitting on a sofa with a packed suitcase beside the door.
“I didn’t know he would hurt her,” she whispered.
“Tell me what you know.”
“Marco came home after midnight that night. His shirt was dirty. There
was a dent in the front of the car. He said he’d hit a deer.”
“Did he have Elena’s phone?”
Sofia nodded. “A blue one. He tried to open it, then smashed it in the
garage. But he kept the memory card.”
“Where is it?”
“He took it when he left. There’s a storage unit in Long Island City. He
goes there when he doesn’t want anyone to know where he is.”
She gave us the address.
Before leaving, I asked, “Did Marco mention the man in the trunk?”
“He said the man was an accountant. Someone stealing from you.”
“His name?”
“Daniel Price.”
Tony went still. Daniel managed several of our legitimate business
accounts. He had disappeared a week earlier. Marco had told me the man
fled after stealing money.
Now I knew he hadn’t run.

He had been carried away.
And Elena had seen it.
