Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

The investigation widened. Daniel Price gave a statement from his
hospital bed. He explained that Marco had been moving money through
shell businesses. When Daniel threatened to report the transfers, Marco
ordered him taken to the storage unit.
Several employees confirmed the scheme. Some had been threatened. Others
had accepted money to stay quiet.
Police recovered most of the stolen funds. But Marco had also paid a
traffic officer to remove the original report from the night Elena was
hit. He had paid a private security contractor to destroy footage from
nearby businesses.

dog took it gently, then rested his head against Mateo’s knee.

restaurant is yours. My people will make sure nobody bothers you. And
the debt is gone.”
“I don’t want charity.”
“Then call it payment for the food Elena shared with my dog.”
Mateo looked down at Bruno. A small, broken smile appeared.
“She always said he had kind eyes.”

a reputation. He had simply remembered a child who had been kind to him.
