Chapter 12 - THE NAME IN THE MEDICAL LEDGER

The first clue came from a pharmacy that had closed nine years earlier.

Daniel placed the old delivery records on Luca's desk just after sunrise. The pages were brittle, the ink faded, and several entries had been marked with a code rather than a patient's name.

“Your medication was delivered through the estate's medical account,” Daniel explained. “The orders were approved by Dr. Nathaniel Voss. But the person authorizing payment was someone else.”

Luca studied the signature.

Silas Rourke.

For twenty years, Silas had been the closest thing Luca had to a brother. He had managed the family's legitimate businesses during Luca's recovery, negotiated with rival organizations, and visited the estate every Sunday with updates. He had been present during the first months after Luca collapsed. He had sat beside the hospital bed when doctors said the damage might be permanent.

“He handled my accounts,” Luca said.

“He handled more than that.”

Daniel opened a second folder.

The toxicology report identified a compound that had been used in a restricted neurological research program. It was not a common medication. It had been manufactured in small quantities for clinical trials, then withdrawn after adverse reactions.

The records showed that a specialist pharmacy had supplied it to a private clinic under a research exemption.

“Who owned the clinic?” Luca asked.

“Dr. Voss.”

Luca leaned back.

“Voss was my physician.”

“He was. He also received payments from a company registered to Silas's nephew.”

Luca stared at the page.

“Could the compound have been administered without Voss knowing?”

“Not according to the delivery records. The quantities were too precise. Someone had to prepare the doses.”

“And Silas?”

“Signed the payment approvals.”

“That doesn't prove he knew what was in them.”

“No,” Daniel said. “But it gives us a place to start.”

Luca looked toward the window. The baseball diamond was visible beyond the glass. Maya and Tommy had not arrived yet.

“Find Voss.”

Daniel hesitated.

“We tried. His clinic was sold, his home is empty, and his current address is listed as a post office box.”

“Then find the person who collects his mail.”

Daniel nodded.

A second knock came at the door.

Elena entered, carrying a small paper bag.

“I brought the medical records I kept,” she said. “The ones from the summer we met.”

Luca looked surprised.

“You kept them?”

“I kept everything from that period. I didn't know why. Maybe I didn't want to forget.”

She placed the bag on his desk. Inside were appointment cards, a hospital discharge note, and a receipt from a pharmacy on the South Side.

Luca picked up the discharge note.

The date was six weeks after the last time he had seen her.

He read the words slowly.

Patient admitted following sudden loss of motor function. Suspected vascular event. Transfer requested by attending physician, Nathaniel Voss.

Luca looked up.

“Voss was there from the beginning.”

Elena nodded.

“I remember him. He came to the hospital after you collapsed. He told me the family had taken over your care. He said I shouldn't visit because the situation was dangerous.”

“Did he tell you I was unconscious?”

“He said you were sedated and might not recognize anyone.”

Luca's fingers tightened around the paper.

“Did you believe him?”

“I was twenty-two, frightened, and pregnant. I had no reason to think your own doctor would lie to me.”

She paused.

“Two weeks later, a man came to my apartment. He said you had asked him to tell me you didn't want to see me again.”

Luca went still.

“Who?”

“I didn't know his name. Tall, gray hair, a scar beside his ear. He wore a dark suit and carried a leather folder.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Silas has a scar beside his left ear.”

Elena's face lost color.

“You're sure?”

Daniel nodded.

Luca closed the folder.

For twelve years, he had believed his closest friend had helped him survive.

Now he wondered whether Silas had made certain he never recovered.

“Get Voss,” Luca said. “And bring Silas to the estate.”

Daniel did not move immediately.

“Boss, if Silas is involved, he'll know we're looking.”

“Then don't tell him we're looking.”
