Chapter 3 - Gabriel’s Test

Gabriel Bellini had not bought the DNA kit to find his father.
He bought it because his wife, Julia, gave him one for Christmas.
Not romantic.
A joke about whether he was “really Italian enough” to keep arguing about tomato sauce.
He sent the sample.
Forgot.
Six weeks later an email arrived.
New close relative match.
Predicted:
first cousin or half-sibling range.
Name:
Michael Moretti.
Gabriel knew the surname.
Everyone in Chicago knew the surname.
But he did not know Michael.
Michael Moretti was Anthony Moretti’s nephew.
Luca’s first cousin.
For Gabriel, if Anthony were his biological father, Michael would also be first cousin.
The match fit.
Gabriel messaged.
Michael replied:
Which side of your family are you from?
Gabriel answered:
Bellini.
Michael:
I don’t know any Bellinis.
Then Michael stopped replying.
Why?
He called Luca? No.
Michael had assumed database error or distant connection.
But Gabriel did not forget.
He asked Carlo.
“Any Moretti blood in our family?”
Carlo laughed too fast.
“No.”
Gabriel noticed.
Then asked Sofia’s sister, Aunt Rosa.
Rosa changed subject.
By then Sofia had been dead two years.
Gabriel searched records.
His birth certificate listed Carlo Bellini as father.
No clue.
Then he found one odd thing.
Original certificate unavailable through ordinary request because amended after adoption.
Adoption?
He confronted Carlo.
Carlo admitted he had legally adopted Gabriel at age two.
That was the first secret.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Carlo cried.
He said:
Because you were mine.
Gabriel asked:
Who was biological father?
Carlo said:
Sofia asked me never to tell.
That was the second secret.
Gabriel became furious.
Then eventually stopped asking.
Not because curiosity disappeared.
Because Carlo had heart surgery scheduled.
Timing again.
Everyone in these families knew how to make truth wait behind a crisis.
Then two years passed.
Now Vanessa called.
“Dad knows.”
Carlo asked:
“Which dad?”
Vanessa closed eyes.
“Luca knows Anthony was Gabriel’s father.”
Silence.
Then Carlo said:
“I’ll tell him.”
Tonight.
No more delay.
He called Gabriel and asked him to come over.
Gabriel arrived at seven with Julia.
Carlo had not expected Julia.
Gabriel said:
“She’s my wife.”
Good.
No secrets by excluding spouse.
Carlo agreed.
Then he told.
Not beautifully.
He began with:
“You know I adopted you.”
Gabriel:
“Yes.”
Then:
“Your biological father was Anthony Moretti.”
Gabriel stared.
Julia’s hand found his.
He asked:
“Luca Moretti’s father?”
“Yes.”
“So Luca is my brother.”
“Half-brother.”
Gabriel laughed once.
No humor.
“Thank you for precision.”
Then:
“Did Mom know?”
Carlo began crying.
“Of course she knew.”
Stupid question.
Gabriel stood.
Walked to kitchen.
Came back.
“How long have you known?”
“Since before you were born.”
That was the answer that broke him.
Not identity.
Thirty-one years.
Then:
“Did Mom want me to know?”
Carlo hesitated.
“Sometimes.”
“What does that mean?”
Sofia’s wishes changed.
At twelve:
not yet.
At eighteen:
after college.
At twenty-two:
maybe now.
At twenty-five:
Carlo, you have to tell him.
Then she got sick.
Breast cancer.
During treatment:
not now.
Near death:
tell Vanessa first. She will help you tell Gabriel when time is right.
Carlo waited.
Vanessa learned four years ago.
Neither told.
Gabriel looked at Vanessa’s empty chair. She wasn’t present, but he could imagine.
“Vanessa knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Four years.”
He closed eyes.
Then:
“Luca?”
“Since yesterday.”
Good distinction.
Then Julia asked:
“Why now?”
Carlo told about photograph and portrait.
Not Claire’s injury yet? He knew some from Vanessa. He said:
The evidence was found because Vanessa tried to remove it before her wedding.
Gabriel’s face changed.
“What did she do?”
Carlo said:
“You need to ask her.”
Good.
No narrative control.
Then Gabriel asked:
“Does Luca want something from me?”
Carlo said:
“I don’t know.”
“Money?”
“No.”
“DNA?”
“There’s already an old paternity test.”
Gabriel laughed again.
“Of course there is.”
Then:
“Do I have one copy?”
Carlo shook head.
“I can get you one.”
“No.”
He looked at Julia.
“I want a new test.”
Not because he distrusted genetics.
Because he wanted information obtained with his consent.
That mattered.
Julia nodded.
Then Gabriel said:
“If Luca wants to know, he can give sample too.”
But paternity to deceased Anthony? Could use Luca sibling test plus old test. Better Gabriel wants independent review of old lab and perhaps compare Luca to confirm half-sibling. Luca agreed later.
No rush.
Then Vanessa called Gabriel that night.
He did not answer.
She texted:
Dad told you?
Gabriel:
Yes.
Vanessa:
I’m sorry.
No response.
Then:
I should have told you.
Gabriel:
Yes.
Then:
Did you know before you got engaged to Luca?
Vanessa:
Yes.
How long?
Four years.
No answer.
Then an hour later:
Were you going to marry my brother without telling either of us?
The sentence.
Vanessa stared.
She typed:
Yes.
Then erased.
Typed:
I was going to tell Luca after wedding.
Erased.
Finally:
I kept postponing. That was wrong.
Gabriel:
That’s not an answer.
Vanessa:
Yes. I was going to marry him without telling either of you first.
Sent.
Then Gabriel blocked her for the night.
He needed sleep.
Didn’t get it.
Then Luca.
Maria called at 8:30.
“Carlo told him.”
“How is he?”
“Not our information.”
Right.
Then:
“Does he want contact?”
“Not yet.”
Luca’s stomach tightened.
He had a brother.
Thirty-one years younger? No, eight years younger.
He had an eight-year-younger brother.
One he had met twice as Vanessa’s brother.
Memory attacked.
Christmas dinner three years earlier.
Gabriel had sat across.
They argued about Bears? Maybe football.
They both disliked olives.
Luca noticed same way they rubbed left eyebrow when thinking? Could be projection.
Now every coincidence looked genetic.
Danger.
Then Maria said:
“Don’t reconstruct a relationship from two dinners.”
Yes.
Then:
“Gabriel wants an independent genetic confirmation.”
“Fine.”
“He is willing to compare with you if you are.”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
“Counsel first.”
Of course.
Then sample arranged through accredited lab with informed consent.
No secret DNA from glass.
Good.
Results one week later:
kinship strongly consistent with paternal half-siblings.
Not 100 percent absolute but high likelihood combined with Anthony test.
Gabriel read his copy.
Luca read his.
No dramatic hug.
They still had not spoken.
Then Gabriel asked for Isabella documents.
Not all.
Only materials about his parentage and adoption.
He was entitled morally, if not legally.
Margaret? Not in story. Isabella estate controlled by Luca. He copied:
Anthony acknowledgment.
paternity report.
adoption consent.
Isabella letter excerpts relating Gabriel.
But not Vanessa’s private communications? Could include Sofia letters. Those belong to archive. Need careful.
Luca asked:
“Should I send everything?”
Maria:
“Send what Gabriel asks, with privacy review for third parties. Let him choose whether to receive Sofia’s letters if Carlo or estate authorizes.”
Carlo had Sofia’s papers.
He offered.
Gabriel said:
Not yet.
Another choice.
Then the trust.
Maria verified.
Isabella created:
The G.B. Education and Security Trust.
Funded with $600,000 of her separate property after Anthony’s death.
Not hush money.
Purpose:
education, health, first home, emergency support.
Trustee:
Lakeshore Fiduciary.
Beneficiary identified by birth date and initials, not Moretti name.
Why had Gabriel never received?
The trust terms required trustee contact beneficiary at age twenty-five.
They did.
Carlo intercepted?
No.
Better: beneficiary address in records was old Carlo residence; letters forwarded? Could become wrongdoing. Maybe Carlo deliberately returned "unknown." That adds. Let's make less criminal: trustee had Gabriel under legal surname at an old address and no current SSN? But banks can locate. Hmm.
Maybe Carlo had known and declined to provide contact info. Trust allows Carlo as protector? Better.
Let's define:
Carlo was designated family contact, not trustee.
At age 25 trustee contacted Carlo seeking updated address.
Carlo told them beneficiary was not ready and requested hold, but lacked authority to permanently block. Trustee then found Gabriel and sent letter? If Gabriel got mysterious letter maybe ignored as scam. Could be.
Let's simplify: Gabriel had received a letter from Lakeshore Fiduciary at 25, assumed scam because it referenced initials and Isabella Moretti, and threw it away. Trustee made reasonable attempts but no claim. Trust remained.
Now:
Current value $1.4 million.
Gabriel laughed when told.
“Of course there’s money.”
He did not want it immediately.
Maria said:
“It’s yours if trust identifies you and conditions satisfied. Refusing today does not require refusing forever.”
Good.
Then Gabriel asked:
“Why did Isabella make this?”
Her trust letter:
Because Anthony is dead and cannot correct what he failed to do.
Because Carlo is your father in the ways that daily life counts.
Because that does not erase the financial responsibility Anthony avoided.
This money is not a purchase of silence or a claim on you.
Use it, refuse it, donate it. It does not buy a name.
Gabriel cried.
Then he said:
“I want to meet Isabella.”
Impossible.
That was first grief for woman he never knew.
Then he asked:
“Did Luca know about trust?”
No.
Good.
Then Claire.
Her independent counsel, Maya Chen, helped report workplace injury.
Security footage supported.
Vanessa had grabbed Claire’s shoulder and Claire struck cabinet.
Could be misdemeanor battery.
Claire did not want to be dragged through press.
Police report could be made.
Prosecutor decides.
She made report.
Why?
“Because if I don’t, she gets to say I fell.”
Good.
Then sale.
Dealer canceled contract.
No loss.
Would Vanessa face fraud/theft charge?
Counsel said maybe not clear because no transfer completed, she signed under purported authority, but false representation documented.
Luca chose civilly not to pursue damages on portrait because recovered.
Criminal authorities could still consider deception if complaint, but Luca did not seek punishment there.
Main relationship consequence enough.
Then Vanessa moved out.
Engagement paused? At this stage likely Luca hasn't formally ended? He should. Chapter 3 maybe he tells her wedding canceled. Could wait chapter 5.
Then Gabriel finally sent Luca a message.
Not through Maria.
Vanessa had given him Luca’s number? Better Maria forwarded with consent.
Gabriel wrote:
I don’t know what to call you.
Luca stared.
Then:
Luca works.
A minute later:
I meant relationship.
Luca smiled despite himself.
He replied:
I don’t know either.
Gabriel:
Good.
Then:
I want to meet. No lawyers in room.
Luca showed Maria.
She said:
“Public place. Security discreet. And remember he said no lawyers in room, not no preparation.”
Luca laughed.
Meeting scheduled at a diner halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Not mansion.
Not foundation.
May you like
Two brothers who had met twice before without knowing.
Now they would meet for first time on purpose.
