Chapter 1 - What Olivia Found Upstairs

Luca did not look at Vanessa again.

His eyes stayed on Olivia.

“Take your hair away from your face.”

Her hand tightened around the platter.

“Sir, I’m fine.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

The room had gone quiet enough that Olivia could hear a spoon touch china three seats away.

Vanessa smiled.

“Luca, please. She told us what happened.”

“No.”

He looked at his fiancée.

“She told me what you answered for her.”

Then back to Olivia.

“Put the platter down.”

She obeyed because her wrist had started shaking.

The silver serving tray touched the sideboard.

Then Olivia raised her left hand and slowly moved the dark hair from her cheek.

Someone near the end of the table gasped.

The makeup had hidden the worst of the color from a distance.

Not up close.

Purple spread beneath her left eye and along the ridge of her cheekbone.

There was a shallow cut near her temple.

Luca stood.

Vanessa said immediately:

“It looks worse than it is.”

He turned.

“How do you know?”

Her mouth closed.

Luca looked at Olivia again.

“Did a pantry door do that?”

Olivia’s heartbeat pounded in the bruised side of her face.

She thought about seventy-four dollars.

Rent due in six days.

Her mother’s phone bill she had promised to cover.

The fact that people like Vanessa Bellini did not lose jobs when they lied.

People like Olivia Hayes did.

“Olivia.”

Luca’s voice was quieter now.

“Did a pantry door do that?”

She looked at Vanessa.

That was all it took.

Luca followed her eyes.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But he saw.

“Everyone out.”

The guests did not move at first.

He looked around the table.

“Dinner is over.”

One of his business associates started to ask whether he wanted—

“No.”

That ended it.

Roman DeSantis, Luca’s security chief, opened the dining room doors and began guiding people toward the front hall.

No shouting.

No one was locked inside.

No one’s phone was taken.

Roman simply asked guests not to photograph Olivia and told them the Moretti family would address any private matter privately.

Within ten minutes, the chandeliers still glowed above a table set for twenty-six people and occupied by five.

Luca.

Vanessa.

Olivia.

Roman.

Carver, the household manager.

Olivia stood beside the sideboard because sitting felt impossible.

Luca pulled out a chair.

“Sit.”

She did.

Then he turned to Carver.

“Call Dr. Harris.”

Vanessa said:

“She does not need a doctor.”

Luca looked at her.

Again.

“How do you know?”

That question had become a blade.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Because I saw her afterward.”

There.

Luca’s expression changed.

“You saw her after the pantry accident.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Upstairs.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Vanessa knew the mistake as soon as she said it.

Luca asked:

“Which room?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Roman stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Listening.

Luca looked at Olivia.

“Which room?”

Her throat tightened.

“Guest room four.”

Vanessa said:

“She had no business being in there.”

Luca turned.

“So you were there.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I went in because I heard something fall.”

“What fell?”

No answer.

Luca looked at Olivia.

“What did you find?”

She started crying.

She hated that.

The tears made her cheek sting.

“Sir, I need this job.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“That is not the same question.”

“I know.”

“Are you afraid I’ll fire you for answering?”

Olivia could not lie convincingly anymore.

“Yes.”

Luca looked at Carver.

Then Roman.

Then back to Olivia.

“You will not be fired tonight for telling me what happened.”

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“Tonight.”

Luca’s head turned.

She realized how it sounded.

Too late.

Olivia breathed.

“At four-ten, I was replacing towels in guest room four.”

“Who was staying there?”

“No one.”

The room had been prepared for engagement guests but not assigned.

Olivia continued.

“I heard a buzzing sound.”

Roman asked:

“Electrical?”

“I thought so.”

She looked at him.

“It was coming from behind the vent near the desk.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Luca said:

“Go on.”

“I thought something was wrong with the air system. I called maintenance.”

“Did they come?”

“No. They said they’d send someone.”

“So what did you do?”

“I moved the desk.”

Vanessa stood.

“You had no permission to move furniture.”

Luca did not look at her.

“Sit down.”

She remained standing.

He repeated:

“Sit.”

This time she did.

Olivia continued.

“There was a small black box behind the vent.”

Roman’s attention sharpened.

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you touch it?”

“Yes.”

“Did you remove it?”

“I pulled it forward.”

“And?”

“It had a memory card.”

Vanessa whispered:

“Olivia.”

Luca’s face went cold.

“Do not say her name like that.”

Olivia’s breathing became shallow.

“There was a little screen.”

Roman said:

“A recorder?”

“Maybe.”

“What was on it?”

Olivia looked at Luca.

“You.”

He stopped.

“Where?”

“Your study.”

Silence.

“The screen showed your office.”

Roman moved.

“Live?”

“Yes.”

“Angle?”

“From the bookcase.”

Luca stared.

There were cameras in his study.

Authorized security cameras covered doors and corridors.

Not the inside of the private room.

Never.

Then Olivia said:

“There were other screens too.”

“How many?”

“Six.”

“Where?”

“One looked like the blue guest room. One was the small library. One was the upstairs sitting room. One was your study.”

“And the others?”

“I couldn’t tell.”

Roman was already messaging his team.

Luca asked:

“What happened next?”

Olivia touched the edge of her swollen cheek without meaning to.

“I heard the door open.”

Vanessa said:

“I found her dismantling private security equipment.”

Roman looked at her.

“Whose security equipment?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Olivia continued.

“Ms. Bellini asked what I was doing.”

“What did you say?”

“I said I thought the camera was illegal.”

Vanessa snapped:

“You said you were taking it to Luca.”

Olivia looked at her.

“Yes.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Then?”

Olivia swallowed.

“She told me to put it back.”

“And you?”

“I said no.”

The word felt dangerous even in memory.

“Then what happened?”

Olivia’s eyes burned.

“She grabbed the device.”

Vanessa said:

“I tried to stop her from stealing it.”

Olivia’s hands clenched.

“You hit me.”

The room went still.

Vanessa stood again.

“I did not.”

Olivia looked directly at her now.

“You hit me with your phone.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“You lunged at me.”

“I was holding the recorder.”

“You were stealing private property.”

Luca raised his voice for the first time.

“Enough.”

Both stopped.

Then he asked Olivia:

“Where did she hit you?”

“Here.”

Olivia pointed to cheek.

“With the phone?”

“Yes.”

“Once?”

“Once.”

“Anything else?”

“She pushed me against the desk.”

“Did you fall?”

“No.”

“Did anyone see?”

“No.”

Vanessa exhaled.

There it was.

No witness.

Then Roman’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“What?”

“Guest room four corridor camera shows Ms. Hayes entering at 4:07.”

“And Vanessa?”

“4:18.”

“How long inside?”

“Ms. Bellini leaves at 4:23.”

“Olivia?”

“4:28.”

Luca looked at Olivia.

“Why did you stay?”

“I was trying to fix my makeup.”

Her voice cracked.

Then Roman said:

“There’s more.”

He turned the phone so Luca could see still images.

At 4:23 Vanessa exited guest room four.

Her right hand held a phone.

Her left held the black recording box.

Luca stared.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Roman swiped.

At 4:28 Olivia emerged holding her cheek.

No black box.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You carried it out.”

“I gave it to Celia.”

Vanessa’s personal assistant.

“Why?”

“To secure it.”

“Where is Celia?”

“She left.”

“When?”

Roman checked.

“5:02.”

“With what?”

Security footage was already being reviewed.

Then Dr. Harris arrived.

He examined Olivia in the small sitting room.

Likely soft-tissue injury.

Possible hairline fracture unlikely but imaging recommended.

No neurological signs.

No vision loss.

Document bruising.

He asked privately whether she felt safe going home.

“Yes.”

Whether anyone controlled her transportation.

“No.”

Whether she wanted police contacted.

Olivia hesitated.

Luca was not in the room.

Good.

Dr. Harris said:

“You do not need your employer’s permission.”

That mattered.

Olivia chose to make a report.

Roman called Chicago police.

Vanessa stared when she learned.

“You’re calling police on me?”

Luca answered:

“Olivia is.”

The distinction mattered.

Then security found Celia.

Not physically.

Her car.

Parking garage camera showed her leaving with a large black tote.

At 5:19 she entered a private office suite leased by a company called Meridian Strategies.

Roman knew the name.

So did Luca.

Vanessa did not react fast enough.

Luca saw.

“Who are they?”

Vanessa said:

“Consultants.”

“For what?”

“The wedding.”

Roman looked at her.

“Meridian does private intelligence.”

Silence.

Luca’s face emptied.

Vanessa began:

“It is not what you think.”

He looked at Olivia’s bruised face.

Then at the screenshot of the black box in Vanessa’s hand.

“What I think doesn’t matter yet.”

He turned to Roman.

“Preserve the house systems. No one deletes anything.”

Then to Vanessa:

“You will not contact Celia.”

She stared.

“You cannot order me not to speak to my assistant.”

“You’re right.”

That surprised everyone.

Then Luca continued:

“But if evidence disappears after this conversation, police can decide what it means.”

No threat.

Just fact.

Then Olivia said:

“There was a folder.”

Everyone turned.

Vanessa went white.

Luca asked:

“What folder?”

“Inside the desk drawer.”

“Whose?”

“I don’t know.”

“What was written on it?”

Olivia closed her eyes.

She could still see the black cover.

White label.

Three words.

“DINNER — LEVERAGE NOTES.”

Nobody spoke.

Then:

“There were names.”

“Whose?”

Olivia looked toward the empty table where twenty-six guests had been sitting less than an hour earlier.

“Almost everyone who was here tonight.”

May you like

That was when Luca understood the cameras might not have been installed to watch him alone.

They may have been installed to collect something from every person invited into his house.
