Chapter 3 - THE MAN IN THE RAIN

I left Ashford Tower through the service entrance. At home, an unknown number called. I recognized Daniel’s voice immediately.
“I saw the video,” he said. “You danced.”
“You called to tell me something I already know?”
“I need to see you. It’s about the accident.”
I nearly ended the call. Then he said, “I lied to the police.”
He admitted another car had followed us that night. He had tried to lose it on the wet road and taken the curve too fast. After the crash, a man visited him in the hospital and warned him not to speak.
“Who was in the car?” I asked.
“I don’t know. But I was paid to stay quiet.”
The next morning, Margaret brought a copy of the letter supposedly written by my mother. The signature looked close, but the handwriting was wrong. It had been mailed from a post office near the Ashford family’s former lake property.
Ethan later showed me a payment record. An Ashford-affiliated foundation had paid the rehabilitation clinic after my accident. Another payment had gone to Daniel.

I stared at the figures. “Why would a billionaire pay my partner?”
Ethan had no answer.
