Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Walter received me in his private office overlooking the river. He did not offer coffee or an apology. He slid a document across the desk showing payments from his foundation to the clinic and to Daniel.

“Assistance,” he said. “Your family was struggling.”

“My mother never told me.”

“Perhaps she was grateful.”

“Or perhaps she was threatened.”

Walter’s expression hardened. He claimed the money had nothing to do with the crash, but when I asked why Daniel had been paid, his answer changed. Daniel had been in debt, he said, and needed help.

I left with copies of the records. Ethan was waiting in the lobby. He admitted his father had told him he no longer had any involvement in the championship.

That evening, a package appeared outside my apartment. Inside was my old championship medal and a photograph of Daniel standing beside a dark sedan. On the back someone had written: ASK HIM WHO WAS IN THE CAR.

A second message arrived: STOP DIGGING, CLAIRE. YOU ALREADY LOST ONCE.

For twelve years I had believed I lost everything in the crash. Perhaps someone had spent those years making sure I believed it.
