Chapter 10 - THE BRACELET'S PROMISE

Mateo was waiting in the mansion's front hall when Alejandro returned with Isabel.

He stood beside Beatrice, holding the little silver bracelet.

He had refused to eat breakfast.

He had refused to go outside.

He had only asked one question.

"When is Mom coming home?"

Then the front door opened.

Isabel stepped inside.

For a moment, Mateo did not move.

His face changed slowly, as if he were afraid that the woman in front of him might be another photograph.

"Mom?"

Isabel dropped to her knees.

"Mateo."

He ran.

She caught him in her arms and held him so tightly that he laughed and cried at the same time.

"I thought you couldn't find me," he whispered.

"I never stopped looking."

Alejandro turned away, wiping his eyes.

Beatrice approached them slowly.

"Isabel."

His sister looked up.

For a moment, hurt and love passed between them.

Then Beatrice knelt beside her.

"I should have questioned the story. I should have protected you."

Isabel shook her head.

"You were lied to too."

Rosa stood behind them, crying openly.

Isabel reached for her hand.

"You helped me escape."

Rosa nodded.

"I should have done more."

"You did enough to give me a chance."

Later that afternoon, Alejandro sat with Isabel in the garden.

Mateo was playing with a small wooden boat near the fountain. Beatrice watched from the terrace, and Rosa brought tea.

Alejandro placed the old bracelet on the table.

"Why did you send Mateo to find me?"

Isabel looked at the silver charm.

"Because I knew Victor was getting closer. I couldn't keep moving him from place to place. I needed him to have family. I needed him to know the truth before someone else told him a lie."

"Why Celeste?"

"She was the only person who knew the promise."

Alejandro looked toward the house.

"Did she betray you?"

"Not at first. She helped me escape. Later, Victor threatened her. She made mistakes because she was frightened, but she did not give him Mateo."

Alejandro was quiet.

"And the bracelet?"

Isabel smiled faintly.

"Three bracelets. One for me, one for Celeste, and one for our grandmother. I told Celeste that if Mateo ever found her, she should lead him to the blue door. I knew the old cottage would hold the first clue."

Alejandro looked at his sister.

"You planned all of this?"

"I planned for the possibility that I might not be able to come home."

He reached across the table and took her hand.

"You should never have had to."

She squeezed his fingers.

"No. But we are here now."

That evening, the family gathered in the dining room.

For the first time in eleven years, Isabel sat at the table where she had grown up.

Mateo sat beside her.

Beatrice placed the three bracelets in the center of the table.

The little boy picked his up.

"Do they mean we're a family?"

Isabel kissed his forehead.

"They mean we never stopped being one."

Alejandro looked around the room.

The mansion had once been filled with secrets, fear, and carefully rehearsed stories. Now the truth sat openly between them.

The family still had a long road ahead. There would be legal proceedings, difficult questions, and years of grief to untangle.

But the most important person had come home.

And the bracelet that had once been a warning had become something else.

A promise.

May you like

A promise that no one in the Moreira family would ever again be forced to disappear just because someone powerful wanted the truth buried.

THE END
