Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE HOSPITAL

The last confirmed sighting of Isabel was outside a private medical clinic in the city.

A nurse remembered a woman matching her description arriving with a man who used the name Rafael Costa.

The clinic's records showed that Isabel had been treated for exhaustion and dehydration. She had asked for help contacting a family member, but the request was withdrawn before anyone could respond.

The signature on the withdrawal form belonged to Celeste Armand.

Alejandro stared at the document.

"She was there."

Detective Alvarez nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did she deny knowing anything?"

"Because she may have been protecting someone. Or herself."

They found Celeste at a small hotel near the airport.

She did not run when Alejandro entered the lobby.

She looked as though she had been waiting.

"Where is Isabel?" he asked.

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I don't know."

"Your signature is on the clinic form."

"I signed it because Isabel asked me to."

"Why would she ask you to withdraw a request for help?"

"Because the man following her had threatened Mateo."

Alejandro stepped closer.

"Who?"

Celeste looked around the lobby.

"Not here."

They moved into a private room with Detective Alvarez present.

Celeste told them that she had kept Isabel's bracelet for years because Isabel had given it to her on the night she escaped. The bracelet was a signal: if Isabel ever needed help, Celeste was supposed to wear it where Alejandro could see.

"Why didn't you tell me when Mateo arrived?" Alejandro asked.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of whom?"

Celeste's voice broke.

"Your uncle, Victor."

Alejandro went still.

Victor Moreira had been his father's younger brother. He had disappeared from the family business after a bitter dispute and was believed to be living abroad.

"Victor is dead," Beatrice had always said.

Celeste shook her head.

"He's alive. He has been using different names. He arranged Isabel's first disappearance because she knew what your father had done with the shipping accounts."

Alejandro's expression hardened.

"What did my father do?"

"He moved money through the company. Rafael discovered it. Isabel found the records. Your father wanted them both silenced."

Celeste admitted that she had helped Isabel escape, but years later Victor found her. He threatened to expose Celeste's involvement unless she helped him locate Isabel.

"So you gave him her location?"

"No. I gave him a false address. But he found her anyway."

"Where is she now?"

Celeste began to cry.

"I don't know. I swear."

Detective Alvarez placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a black car parked outside the clinic.

"Do you recognize the driver?"

Celeste looked at it.

Then she nodded.

"Victor's security chief."

May you like

Alejandro stood.

"Then we know where to start."
