Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

The audit revealed that more than eighty thousand dollars had been diverted through the staffing company over eighteen months. Some of the money came from inflated invoices. Some came from deductions that had been taken from employees' wages without explanation.
The amount mattered, but the pattern mattered more.
Vanessa had targeted employees who were new, financially vulnerable, or unlikely to challenge her. She had shortened breaks, changed schedules without notice, and used threats about references to keep people quiet.
Hannah was not the first.
She was simply the first person whose complaint had reached Luca while he was present.
The news shook the household. Several former employees contacted Dana after hearing that an independent review was underway. One said she had been told she would lose custody of her child if she reported missing wages. Another had been forced to sign a resignation letter she could not read.
Luca asked the legal team to help each employee recover unpaid wages and to provide copies of their employment records.
He also announced that Vanessa no longer had any authority over household staff or finances.
Vanessa responded by calling him cruel.
“You're destroying everything we built,” she said during a private meeting.
“We built nothing together if it depended on people being afraid.”
“You're choosing a maid over me.”
“I'm choosing the truth.”
She stared at him. “You think Hannah cares about you? She wants a paycheck. That's all.”
“Then she deserves to earn it without being threatened.”
Vanessa's voice dropped. “You have no idea what I know about you.”
Luca did not move. “If you have information about a crime, give it to the authorities.”
For a moment, something like panic crossed her face.
Then she left.
At the guest residence, Hannah was trying to feed Noah when Dana arrived with a document folder. It contained a revised contract, details of the new leave policy, and confirmation that the lost milk and damaged lunch bag would be reimbursed.
Hannah almost laughed at the last item.
“They're paying me for the bottles?”
“They're reimbursing the documented loss,” Dana said. “And the household is changing its policies so this doesn't happen again.”
Hannah signed the updated agreement.
“Does this mean I have to go back to the mansion?”
“No. You can return when you feel ready. You can also request a transfer to another property.”
Hannah considered it.
She liked the work. She liked Mrs. Alvarez and the other staff. She did not want Vanessa to be the reason she lost a job she had worked hard to keep.
“I want to go back,” she said. “But I don't want to be alone with her.”
“You won't be.”
That afternoon, Luca visited the residence with a small box. Inside was a new insulated milk carrier, several storage containers, and a handwritten note from Mrs. Alvarez.
For the little boy who deserves every drop.
Hannah smiled.
“You didn't have to do this.”
“I know.”
She looked at him. “I need you to understand something. I don't want to be treated like a special case because you feel guilty.”
“Then I won't.”
“I want the rules to apply to everyone.”
“They will.”
“And I want to be able to tell you when something is wrong without worrying that I'll lose my job.”
Luca nodded. “That's fair.”
Noah stirred in his crib. Luca looked toward the baby, then back at Hannah.
“May I?”
Hannah hesitated before placing Noah carefully in his arms.
Luca held him awkwardly at first, as though the small weight required more care than anything he had ever carried. Noah blinked up at him, then curled his fingers around Luca's thumb.
For a few seconds, the powerful man who frightened half the city looked completely uncertain.
Hannah smiled.
“He likes you.”
“I haven't done anything.”
“Sometimes that's enough.”
Luca returned the baby gently.
But when he left, Hannah noticed that his expression had changed.
May you like
He was no longer merely trying to repair a household.
He was beginning to understand what kind of man he wanted to be inside it.
