Chapter 7 - The Woman at the Gate

Vanessa did not leave quietly.

Two days after her authority was removed, she arrived at the mansion with a suitcase and demanded to see Luca. Security refused to let her enter the main house, so she waited at the front gate until Marco came outside.

“I live here,” she said.

“You have a room at the hotel,” Marco replied. “Your belongings are being packed.”

“I am engaged to Luca.”

“Not anymore.”

Her expression twisted. “He can't end this because of a few complaints from staff.”

“It's not my decision to explain.”

Vanessa tried to push past him. The guard at the gate stepped forward, and she stopped.

“Tell him I have the original account files.”

Marco looked at her. “What files?”

“The ones that show where the money really went. If he wants them, he can speak to me himself.”

Marco informed Luca.

Luca agreed to meet her in the presence of his attorney and Dana. The meeting took place in the formal sitting room. Vanessa wore a cream suit and carried a leather folder.

“You're making a terrible mistake,” she began.

“Show me the files.”

She opened the folder and placed several printed statements on the table. They showed transfers from the staffing company to an account controlled by Victor Bellini.

Luca examined them.

“These are already in the audit.”

Vanessa's smile faded.

“Not all of them.”

She produced another document: a transfer authorization bearing Luca's electronic signature.

He looked at it carefully.

“I didn't sign this.”

“You approved it.”

“No.”

“You were busy. You trusted me to handle the details.”

The attorney examined the document. “We'll need the original metadata.”

Vanessa leaned back. “I can explain everything. But I need you to understand that Victor made me do it.”

“Did Victor force you to threaten Hannah?”

Vanessa's eyes flashed. “She was listening where she shouldn't have been.”

“Did he tell you to throw away her baby's milk?”

“That was a misunderstanding.”

“Did he tell you to lie about Mrs. Alvarez?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Luca closed the folder.

“You keep blaming other people for choices you made.”

Her face crumpled into a look of wounded disbelief. “After everything I've done for you?”

“What have you done for me?”

“I stood beside you. I attended your events. I made this house look respectable.”

“You made it look respectable while people inside it were being threatened.”

Vanessa rose. “You'll regret humiliating me.”

The attorney stood too. “This meeting is over.”

As security escorted her out, Vanessa turned toward Luca.

“You think you're safe because you have men at the gates. You don't know who has been watching you.”

Luca's expression remained cold.

“Then tell the authorities what you know.”

She left without another word.

Later, investigators confirmed that Victor Bellini had been moving money through several shell companies. They also found evidence that he had used Vanessa's access to the mansion to obtain copies of private business schedules.

The threat was larger than a household dispute.

Luca authorized a full security review, but he did not allow anyone to use the investigation as an excuse to intimidate staff.

Hannah returned to work the following week. When she entered the kitchen, Mrs. Collins greeted her with a hug.

“Your place is still here,” the older woman said.

Hannah set her milk carrier in the refrigerator.

For the first time since returning from maternity leave, she did not feel she had to hide it.
