Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WITH THE HAMMER

The first scream came just as the string quartet began playing the wedding march.
“DADDY! STOP THE WEDDING!”
Daniel Mercer turned from the aisle.
His six-year-old daughter, Lily, was running across the ballroom in white tights and a pale blue dress. Her dark curls bounced against her shoulders. In both hands, she held a small wooden hammer taken from the crew repairing a loose panel near the service entrance.
“Lily!” Daniel called. “Sweetheart, put that down.”
She didn't.
She ran straight toward the enormous flower wall behind the wedding stage. White roses, pale pink peonies, and cascading greenery covered a wooden structure nearly twelve feet wide. It had been built that morning to frame the ceremony photographs.
Lily struck it.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
“Mommy's inside!” she sobbed. “Daddy, Mommy's inside the wall!”
The guests went silent.
Daniel hurried down the steps. “Lily, stop. You're going to hurt yourself.”
But she swung again, striking the lower wooden panel. A hollow sound echoed through the ballroom.
Then Daniel heard it.
A faint thump.
Not from Lily's hammer.
From behind the wall.
His blood turned cold.
He took the hammer from his daughter and looked toward the security guards. “Get the venue manager. Now.”
The best man, Ethan Cole, appeared beside him. “Daniel, this is a wedding. She's upset. Let me take her outside.”
Lily twisted away from Ethan and clung to her father's leg.
“No! He knows!” she cried. “He told me Mommy went away, but I heard her!”
Daniel looked down at her. “When did you hear her?”
“Before lunch. I was looking for my blue rabbit. I heard Mommy say my name.”
The hammer felt suddenly heavy.
Daniel struck the panel where Lily had been hitting it. The first blow cracked the decorative wood. The second broke through. Flowers shook loose and fell across the stage.
A sound came from inside.
A woman's voice.
“Help…”
Daniel swung again.
The panel split. Behind the flower-covered wall was a narrow storage compartment, barely deep enough for a person to sit inside.
And there, on the floor, was Olivia.
Her wrists were tied. Tape covered her mouth. Dust coated her blue dress, and a strand of dark hair clung to her cheek. Her eyes were open, but she looked barely conscious.
For one second, Daniel couldn't move.
Then he dropped the hammer and reached inside.
“Olivia.”
He pulled the tape from her mouth as gently as he could. His hands shook so badly he struggled with the knot around her wrists.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
He caught her as she slumped forward.
Lily screamed and rushed into her mother's arms.
“Mommy!”
Olivia wrapped one trembling arm around her daughter. “My baby. My sweet girl.”
Daniel looked up at the guests. “Call an ambulance. Lock every exit. Nobody leaves.”
Ethan stepped forward. “Daniel, let the police handle this. We need to get the ceremony under control.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Under control?”
His voice was quiet, but the room seemed to shrink around it.
“My former wife has been tied up inside a wall at my wedding. I don't care about the ceremony.”
Olivia tried to speak again. Daniel leaned close.
“Who did this?”
Her eyes moved past his shoulder.
Toward the bride.
Vanessa stood beside the altar in a fitted ivory gown. Her bouquet hung loosely from one hand. Her face had gone pale, but she was not looking at Olivia.
She was looking at Ethan.
Olivia swallowed.
“Vanessa locked me in there.”
A murmur rippled through the ballroom.
Vanessa shook her head. “She's confused. She's been unstable for months.”
Daniel stood slowly.
“Don't say another word.”
Two security guards moved toward Vanessa. She backed away, then suddenly pointed at Ethan.
“He told me to do it!” she shouted. “He said the wall would be opened after the ceremony. He said nobody would find her!”
Every eye turned toward the best man.
Ethan's face hardened.
“She's lying.”
Then Lily lifted her head from her mother's shoulder.
“No,” she whispered. “I saw Uncle Ethan give her the key.”
Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.
Ethan had been his closest friend for fourteen years. He had stood beside him at his first wedding. He had helped him raise Lily after Olivia disappeared from their lives. He had been the one who encouraged Daniel to propose to Vanessa.
And now his daughter was saying he had helped hide her mother inside a wall.
The ballroom doors slammed shut.
Sirens began to sound outside.
Daniel held Olivia with one arm and Lily with the other.

His dream wedding had become a crime scene.
And the worst part was that the people responsible had been standing beside him at the altar.
