Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED

The ambulance crew took Olivia to St. Anne's Hospital.
Daniel rode with her while his sister, Rachel, followed in another car with Lily. Police officers remained at the hotel, separating guests and collecting statements.
Olivia was dehydrated, bruised, and exhausted. The doctor said she had likely been confined for several hours, though her condition suggested she had been moved around before reaching the ballroom.
Daniel sat beside her bed, unable to stop looking at the marks around her wrists.
“Why were you there?” he asked when the nurse stepped out.
Olivia's eyes opened.
“I came to warn you.”
“About Vanessa?”
She nodded.
“Why didn't you call me?”
“I tried. Your number went straight to voicemail. Then Ethan called me.”
Daniel's jaw tightened. “What did he say?”
“He said you wanted to meet privately before the ceremony. He told me there was something important about Lily.”
Daniel felt sick.
“I never called you.”
“I know that now.”
She turned her face toward the window.
For two years, Olivia had been absent from his life. Not dead, not officially missing, but gone. She had left their marriage after a series of arguments and a frightening incident involving a break-in at her apartment. She told Daniel she needed space and took Lily to stay with her sister for several weeks.
Then, one evening, she vanished.
Her car was found near a bus station. Her phone was discovered in a trash bin. Police found no evidence of a struggle. Olivia's family believed she had chosen to disappear, and Daniel had spent months searching before accepting that she might never return.
He had raised Lily alone.
Then Vanessa had entered their lives.
She was charming, patient, and affectionate with Lily. She never demanded that Daniel forget Olivia. In fact, she often encouraged him to speak kindly about his daughter's mother.
Now Daniel wondered whether that kindness had been another performance.
“What happened after Ethan called?” he asked.
Olivia took a shallow breath.
“I went to the hotel because I thought Lily might be in danger. Ethan met me near the service entrance. He said you were upstairs. Then Vanessa came out of the catering corridor.”
“What did she do?”
“She showed me a photograph.”
Olivia's eyes filled.
“It was Lily leaving school. Taken that morning. Vanessa said if I went to the police, Lily would be sent somewhere I could never find her.”
Daniel stood.
“She threatened our daughter?”
“She said she knew every person who picked Lily up. She knew your schedule. She knew where Rachel lived.”
He looked toward the door as if he could reach the ballroom by sheer force.
“Why didn't you tell me any of this before?”
“I didn't know whether I could trust you.”
The words landed harder than he expected.
Olivia explained that after disappearing, she had spent months staying with people she trusted. She had discovered that someone had been accessing her old email accounts and tracking her movements. Every time she tried to contact Daniel, she received messages warning her to stay away from him and Lily.
At first, she believed Daniel had sent them.
Then she learned the messages had been sent from an account connected to Ethan's office.
“I came back because I found something,” she said.
“What?”
“A folder of company records. Transfers from your father's charitable foundation into accounts that didn't exist on the public filings. Ethan was managing the foundation after your father died.”
Daniel frowned.
“My father died six years ago.”
“I know. The transfers started before he died. They continued afterward.”
Daniel's company had been built by his father, a respected property developer who had spent the last decade of his life supporting hospitals and children's charities. Ethan had been appointed financial director after Daniel took over the business.
“What does Vanessa have to do with it?”
“She was helping him. They were using your wedding to get you to sign new trust documents.”
Daniel remembered the papers Vanessa had placed in his study three days earlier. She had described them as routine estate planning. He had planned to review them after the honeymoon.
“What documents?”
“A change to Lily's trust. A transfer of voting shares. And a power of attorney giving Ethan authority over several accounts.”
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
The nurse returned with medication. Olivia's eyelids grew heavy.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “there's something else.”
He leaned closer.
“Ethan didn't just help Vanessa hide me. He knew I was alive two years ago. He knew where I was.”
“Why?”
“Because he was the one who arranged the messages that made me run.”
Before Daniel could ask more, Olivia fell asleep.
He stepped into the corridor and called Rachel.
“Keep Lily with you. Don't let anyone take her anywhere unless I confirm it.”
“Daniel, what's happening?”
“I think Ethan has been stealing from the company. And I think he used Vanessa to keep Olivia away from us.”
A pause.
“Do you think he might come here?”
May you like
Daniel looked toward the elevator.
“I know he might.”
