Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM

Alexander arrived at the family court hearing with two attorneys and Daniel.
He wore a dark suit and the expression of a man accustomed to getting what he wanted.
I arrived with Rachel.
I wore a simple navy dress. My hair was tied back, and my hands were cold.
Alexander looked at me across the hallway.
“Claire.”
I kept walking.
He stepped into my path.
“You need to stop this.”
Rachel moved between us.
“Mr. Moretti, communicate through counsel.”
Alexander's eyes stayed on mine.
“I'm their father.”
“And I'm their mother,” I said.
His jaw tightened.
The hearing began twenty minutes later.
Alexander's attorney argued that I had removed the children without consent and that there was no evidence they were in danger.
Rachel presented the timeline.
She showed the court the travel records proving Alexander's repeated trips to Seattle. She introduced the property documents, the photographs, and the financial transfers. She also described the locked bedroom and the circumstances of our departure.
The judge listened carefully.
Alexander's attorney objected to several documents, arguing that they had not been properly authenticated.
Rachel did not argue beyond what she could support.
She asked for temporary protection while the financial and criminal matters were investigated.
Then the judge looked at Alexander.
“Mr. Moretti, did you lock your wife in the bedroom?”
Alexander's attorney stood.
“My client acknowledges that the door was locked, but he did so to prevent an emotionally charged argument from escalating.”
The judge looked at him.
“Was she free to leave?”
“No.”
“Then she was not free to leave.”
Alexander shifted in his seat.
The judge continued.
“Did you maintain a second household in Seattle during your marriage?”
Alexander's attorney asked for a moment.
Then he answered.
“My client had a personal relationship with Ms. Reynolds. He does not dispute that he has a son with her.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
I kept my eyes on the table.
The judge reviewed the documents and issued a temporary order. The children would remain with me pending a full custody evaluation. Alexander could have supervised contact under conditions set by the court. He was prohibited from removing them from the state or contacting them outside the approved arrangement.
It was not a final victory.
But it was protection.
Outside the courtroom, Alexander approached me again.
“You've made your point.”
I stared at him.
“My point?”
“You've embarrassed me. You've dragged private matters into court.”
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
“You embarrassed yourself when you built another family and lied to the one you already had.”
His face hardened.
“Do you think you can raise them without me?”
“I already did.”
He looked as if I had struck him.
For a moment, I thought he might say something cruel.
Instead, he looked away.
“Lily asked for me last week.”
My chest tightened.
“Did she?”
“She wants to know when I'm coming home.”
I swallowed.
“Then you should think about what you want to tell her.”
He stepped closer.
“I want my family back.”
“You had your family. You just didn't come home to it.”
Rachel touched my elbow.
“Claire, we should go.”
I followed her.
May you like
Behind me, Alexander remained in the courthouse hallway, surrounded by lawyers and men who would obey every command he gave.
For once, none of them could make me turn around.
