Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO LOST CONTROL

Adrian Vale was arrested three days later at a small airport outside Vancouver.
He had been attempting to leave under a false name.
The investigation uncovered a network of shell companies used to move money between Chicago, Seattle, and several overseas accounts. Some transfers had been authorized by Alexander. Others had been forged.
The distinction mattered.
Alexander had not been innocent of everything. He had knowingly used company funds to maintain the Seattle household and had concealed the transactions from his business partners. But Adrian had also stolen from him and used forged documents to secure loans.
The federal investigators wanted answers.
Alexander's attorneys advised him to cooperate.
He refused at first.
Then Daniel brought him a message.
It was from me.
I am willing to provide the records I have. I am not willing to protect you from the consequences of your own decisions.
Alexander read it twice.
He called Daniel.
“Tell her I don't need her help.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Boss, the records she has could help establish which transfers were yours and which were forged.”
“I said I don't need her help.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You may need more than help.”
Alexander stared at him.
For years, Daniel had never challenged him.
“What are you saying?”
“I'm saying the organization is exposed. People are asking questions. Some of them think you used the Seattle accounts to move money without their knowledge.”
Alexander looked toward the window.
“Who?”
“I can't say until we know more.”
That evening, Alexander met Sophia at the Seattle house.
She had packed a small suitcase for Mateo.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“To my sister's.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't know what happens next.”
“You're safe here.”
“Am I?”
He looked at her.
Sophia placed a folder on the table.
“I spoke to an attorney. She told me not to sign anything else.”
Alexander opened it.
Inside were copies of the forged loan agreement and the property transfer.
“I didn't know Adrian had done this,” Sophia said. “But I knew you were paying for the house with money you said was from business.”
He said nothing.
“I should have asked more questions.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were going to leave Claire.”
Alexander looked at her.
“I told you I would.”
“You told me a lot of things.”
The words landed harder than he expected.
Sophia closed the suitcase.
“I'm not going to use Mateo to keep you here. But I won't let him grow up in a house where people are afraid to answer the door.”
Alexander looked toward the stairs.
Mateo was sitting on the floor, lining up toy cars.
“Can I see him?”
“Of course. You're his father.”
He knelt beside the boy.
“Hey, buddy.”
Mateo held up a red car.
“Look, Daddy. Fast.”
Alexander smiled.
“Very fast.”
The boy pushed the car across the rug.
Alexander watched him play and thought about Lily and Noah.
He had believed that being powerful meant being able to provide for everyone.
He had confused money with presence, protection with control, and love with possession.
Now he had three children in two homes, a wife who wanted a divorce, a woman who no longer trusted him, and an organization that might not survive the investigation.

For the first time, he understood that he had not lost control because Claire left.
He had lost control long before that.
