Chapter 2 - THE BRUISE UNDER THE SLEEVE

Dr. Patel arrived twenty minutes later. She examined Grace first, asking questions in a calm voice and letting the child decide whether she wanted her father nearby. Grace refused to let go of Lara's hand.
The doctor found no serious injury, but she noticed several fading marks on Grace's upper arm. They were small, oval bruises, each at a different stage of healing.
“Do you know how these happened?” Dr. Patel asked.
Grace looked at Damian. He sat beside her bed, his hands clasped tightly. “You can tell us, sweetheart.”
“Viviana holds me when I don't listen.”
“How does she hold you?”
Grace demonstrated by wrapping her fingers around her own arm.
Dr. Patel made a note. “Has anyone else seen this?”
Grace shook her head. “She says it's a game.”
Damian kept his voice level. “Thank you for telling us.”
The doctor explained that the bruises needed to be documented and that Grace should speak with a child specialist. She advised Damian not to question his daughter repeatedly or pressure her to provide details. “Make it clear she did the right thing by speaking. And don't allow anyone she fears to be alone with her.”
After the examination, Grace fell asleep. Lara tucked the blanket around her.
“Did she ever tell you before?” Damian asked quietly.
“She tried. About three weeks ago, she asked whether grown-ups could be bad even when they smiled.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her that if someone frightened her, she could tell a person she trusted. She asked whether you would believe her.”
The words landed harder than an accusation.
“Why didn't you come to me?”
Lara's eyes lifted. “I tried. Twice. Both times Viviana said you were in meetings and told the staff not to disturb you. The second time, she warned me that my contract could be ended if I kept interfering.”
Damian stood. “You should have come to me anyway.”
“I know. But I needed this job, and Grace needed someone who could stay near her. I thought I could protect her until you noticed.”
He studied her face. There was no self-pity in it, only exhaustion. “I should have noticed.”
Adrian, Damian's head of security, entered with a tablet. “We found footage from the pantry corridor. The camera inside the pantry was disconnected last month. The hallway camera still captured part of what happened.”
At 4:16, Lara entered carrying folded towels. Viviana followed. The two women spoke. Viviana stepped closer, grabbed Lara's arm, and shoved her backward. Lara struck the shelving and dropped the towels. Grace appeared at the doorway seconds later. Viviana pointed at Lara, then at Grace, and held a finger to her lips.
Damian watched it twice.
“Save the original,” he said. “Make a verified copy for the authorities.”
Adrian nodded. “There's another recording. From the nursery corridor. It shows Viviana entering Grace's room after midnight several times.”
Damian's eyes narrowed. “How many?”
“Seven in the last month.”
