Chapter 6 - WHAT THE CAMERAS DIDN'T SHOW

The security recordings answered many questions, but they did not explain how Viviana had gained such control over the household.

Adrian discovered that she had persuaded the former house manager to give her access to staff schedules, medication deliveries, and the security dashboard. She had also arranged for two cameras near the pantry and the children's hallway to be disabled during selected hours.

The house manager, confronted with the records, admitted that Viviana had threatened to have him fired and blamed him for missing inventory if he refused.

Damian suspended him pending the investigation, but he did not let the man leave without giving a statement.

“Fear doesn't excuse helping her,” Damian said. “But I want the truth, not a convenient scapegoat.”

The house manager handed over a small notebook. It contained dates, staff names, and short descriptions of incidents he had been too afraid to report.

One entry caught Damian's attention: February 12. Miss Grace locked in playroom for forty minutes after refusing dinner. Ms. Sloane said it was a lesson.

Damian closed the notebook. He remembered that evening. He had returned late and found Grace asleep on the sofa. Viviana had told him the child had enjoyed a long game and simply tired herself out. He had kissed Grace's forehead and gone upstairs.

The memory made him feel ill.

He went to the playroom and found Grace building a tower with wooden blocks.

“Can I ask you something?” he said.

She nodded.

“Do you remember being alone in this room one evening?”

Grace's hands slowed.

“Was the door locked?”

She nodded.

“Who locked it?”

“Viviana.”

“What happened?”

“I was hungry. I didn't want the green soup. She said I had to stay until I finished it.”

“Did anyone come?”

“Lara heard me. She opened the door.”

Damian looked toward Lara, who stood near the doorway.

“You never told me.”

“She told me not to,” Lara replied. “She said if I interfered again, she would tell you I was stealing from the house.”

“Why didn't you report it?”

“I thought the house manager would tell you. I didn't understand how much access she had.”

Damian crouched in front of Grace. “I'm sorry I didn't know.”

Grace looked at him carefully. “You were busy.”

“Being busy isn't an excuse.”

She reached for his hand. “Can we play now?”

He nodded.

For the next half hour, Damian built a tower that collapsed three times. Grace laughed each time, and Lara joined them on the rug. It was the first ordinary afternoon the house had seen in months.

That night, Damian arranged independent safeguarding procedures for Grace, including regular check-ins with a child specialist and clear rules about medication, discipline, and access to her rooms.

“No one gets to make private rules for my daughter again,” he said.

Adrian nodded.

“And the staff need a way to report concerns directly to me or an independent manager. No one should have to risk their livelihood to protect a child.”

For the first time, Damian understood that being a father was not only about providing a beautiful home. It was about making sure the people inside it were safe.
