Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

The night before Mia’s operation, Sarah sat beside her daughter’s bed
and watched her sleep.
She had signed the consent forms, spoken with the anesthesiologist, and
reviewed the recovery plan. Everything was ready.
Still, fear kept her awake.
A soft knock came at the door. Evelyn entered slowly, supported by a
nurse. Her arm was still in a sling.
“You should be resting,” Sarah whispered.
“So should you.”
Evelyn sat beside the bed.
“I wanted to see her before tomorrow.”
Sarah brushed Mia’s hair away from her forehead.
“Why did you trust me?” Sarah asked.
Evelyn considered the question. “Because when everyone else watched me
fall, you stayed beside me. You didn’t ask what it would cost you.”
“I was afraid.”
“Courage isn’t the absence of fear.”
Evelyn reached for Sarah’s hand.
“When Mia is well, let her grow up without believing she owes anyone for
helping her.”
Sarah nodded. “I promise.”
Luca arrived with a paper bag. Inside was a picture book about a girl
who built a garden.
“Mia asked for this last time,” he said. “I thought she might like it
after surgery.”
“Thank you,” Sarah replied.
Luca looked at the child. “I hope tomorrow goes smoothly.”
“Me too.”
He explained that the fund was being rebuilt under an independent board.
No family member would approve payments alone. Hospitals and schools
would receive payments directly, and every family would receive written
confirmation.
“That’s how it should have been from the beginning,” Sarah said.
“Yes.”
May you like
Evelyn smiled faintly. “I raised you. I know when to ignore you.”
For the first time in days, Luca laughed.
