Chapter 9 - TWELVE NAMES

Mia’s surgery lasted longer than Sarah expected.
She waited in the family lounge with a paper cup of untouched tea. Luca
remained nearby without crowding her. Evelyn sat with her injured arm
resting against a cushion.
When the surgeon finally appeared, Sarah stood so quickly that her chair
tipped backward.
“The procedure went well,” the doctor said. “Mia is recovering in the
postoperative unit. There were no unexpected complications.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
Evelyn reached for her hand.
“She’s all right,” the older woman whispered.
Sarah began to cry.
Later, when Mia woke, she asked whether she could have ice cream.
The nurse smiled. “We’ll see what your doctor says.”
Mia frowned. “That’s not a no.”
Sarah laughed.
Meanwhile, the investigation reached a turning point. The original
records, bank transfers, Vanessa’s statement, and the digital drive
established a trail of financial misconduct. Richard Bellini and two
former financial officers were charged with fraud, conspiracy, and
related offenses. The case would take time, but the fund’s remaining
assets had been secured.
The independent board contacted all twelve families in Evelyn’s
handwritten ledger.
Some had moved. One family had changed its phone number. Another had
assumed the scholarship was canceled because their child had done
something wrong.
A mother named Denise arrived at the mansion with her teenage son. She
held the reinstatement letter in both hands.
“I thought we had been forgotten,” she said.
Evelyn shook her head. “I never forgot you.”
The boy looked at Luca. “Does this mean I can go back to college next
semester?”
“If the school confirms your enrollment, the fund will cover the
approved amount directly,” Luca replied.
The boy’s eyes filled. “Thank you.”
Luca looked at his mother. “You were right to keep the list.”
“I was right to remember the names,” Evelyn said. “I should never have
had to hide them.”
The new board promised regular financial summaries and direct contacts
for every family.
Sarah visited the mansion after Mia returned home. She carried a drawing
her daughter had made: twelve children standing beneath a tree, each
holding a book.
