Chapter 7 - THE HEARING

The investigation lasted several months.
Arthur Bell was charged with fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and
involvement in the attack that killed Daniel. Additional charges
followed as investigators traced the shell companies and identified the
subcontractors who had carried out the warehouse operation.
Vanessa cooperated with the authorities after receiving legal advice.
Her testimony helped establish the sequence of events, but it did not
erase her role in threatening Rachel and hiding the truth.
The Moretti Holdings board placed several executives on leave and
commissioned an independent audit.
Gabriel attended every major hearing.
Rachel did not want to testify at first. The thought of sitting in a
room with Arthur made her feel ill.
But she remembered Daniel’s notebook, his letter, and the way he had
tried to protect them.
“I won’t let them say he was a traitor,” she told Gabriel.
At the hearing, she described the threats, the returned letters, and the
years she had spent believing that the Moretti family wanted nothing to
do with her.
Arthur’s lawyer suggested that she had misunderstood the conversations.
Rachel looked directly at him.
“I remember every word. I remember because my daughter was asleep in the
next room when your client told me she could grow up without a mother.”
The room went quiet.
The prosecutor presented Daniel’s audio recording. His voice played
through the speakers, clear and unmistakable.
He named the shell companies. He described the false invoices. He
explained why he feared Arthur.
Then came the final sentence.
“Take care of Rachel and Lily. They are my whole world.”
Rachel lowered her head.
Gabriel reached across the aisle and placed a hand near hers, not
touching until she looked up.
She gave a small nod.
The hearing continued.
The court eventually found Arthur guilty on multiple counts. The
remaining defendants entered pleas or faced separate trials. Vanessa was
convicted of obstruction and witness intimidation, among other offenses,
and received a sentence determined by the court.
When the verdict was read, Gabriel did not celebrate.
He looked at Daniel’s photograph in the folder before him.
Justice was not the same as getting his friend back.

But the truth had finally been spoken in a place where it could not be
quietly buried.
