Chapter 1 - THE GIRL BEHIND THE PORTRAIT

The first thing Luca Moretti heard after the glass shattered was his daughter's voice.

“Daddy!”

It was not the cheerful cry Lily usually made when she spotted him across a room. It was thin, hoarse, and frightened—the sound of a child who had been calling for help for so long that she no longer expected anyone to answer.

Luca forgot the thirty-six guests watching him. He forgot the engagement dinner, the champagne, the expensive flowers, and the ring waiting in a velvet box beside his plate. He forgot Vanessa Bellini standing in a white silk gown beneath the chandeliers.

He ran toward the broken portrait.

“Hannah, move!”

The housekeeper stumbled away from the splintered frame. Her face was pale beneath the streak of blood on her cheek. One hand clutched the sledgehammer. The other pressed against her right thigh, where a dark stain had spread through her black uniform.

Luca reached the concealed metal door and seized its handle.

“Lily! Baby, Daddy's here!”

A small fist struck the other side.

“Daddy, it's dark!”

“I'm opening it. Stay back from the door.”

He pulled. Nothing happened.

Behind him, Daniel Reyes, his head of security, pushed through the guests. “Boss, don't force it. There's an emergency release behind the frame.”

“Then find it.”

Daniel dropped to one knee and began examining the exposed panel. Luca looked over his shoulder at the woman who had broken the portrait.

“Hannah. Tell me what happened.”

She tried to answer, but her knees wavered. Blood slid down her shin.

“She was crying,” Hannah managed. “I heard her behind the wall. Miss Bellini said Lily was asleep, but she wasn't. She was locked in there.”

Vanessa swept forward, her expression twisting with outrage.

“She is lying! She's been unstable for weeks. She attacked a priceless portrait in the middle of our engagement dinner!”

Luca did not turn.

“Daniel.”

“Working, boss.”

“Get my daughter out.”

A faint electronic chirp came from the panel. Daniel removed a small access plate and exposed a row of switches. He tried the first. A red light blinked. He tried a second. The lock clicked once, then stopped.

“It's on a secondary security circuit,” he said. “Someone activated the manual lock from outside.”

“Who?”

Daniel glanced at the control screen. “The last access code belongs to Miss Bellini.”

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh. “That's impossible. I haven't been near this hallway.”

Luca finally turned.

His face was not angry in the ordinary sense. It was still, almost empty. The men who worked for him knew that expression. It meant he was trying very hard not to make a decision before he had all the facts.

“Why does your access code appear on a room where my daughter is locked inside?”

“I don't know. Hannah could have used it.”

Hannah looked up, stunned. “I don't even have access to that system.”

“Be quiet!” Vanessa snapped.

Lily began crying again behind the door.

“Daddy, please!”

That broke whatever restraint Luca had left.

“Open it.”

Daniel removed a compact tool from his belt and worked the release. A low mechanical hum sounded inside the wall. The red light turned amber, then green.

The door eased inward.

Luca dropped to his knees.

Lily stood in the narrow room wearing a pale pink dress, one sock missing, her brown curls damp against her forehead. A stuffed rabbit lay on the floor beside a metal chair. A small plastic cup had tipped over near the wall. The room smelled of dust and stale air.

For one terrible moment, Lily did not move.

Then she ran.

“Daddy!”

Luca caught her against his chest and held her so tightly he felt her little ribs move beneath his hands. She buried her face in his neck and sobbed.

“I'm here,” he whispered. “I'm here, sweetheart. I have you.”

“I called you.”

“I know.”

“I called and called.”

“I know, baby. I'm sorry.”

He pressed his lips to her hair. He had faced armed men without flinching, survived betrayals that cost millions, and made decisions that had frightened entire rooms. None of it had prepared him for the weight of his three-year-old daughter shaking in his arms.

Daniel crouched beside them. “Boss, she needs to be checked by a doctor. We should get her out of this room.”

Luca nodded, then looked at the small chair, the empty cup, and the interior latch that could not be opened from inside.

“How long?”

Daniel checked the security log. “The lock was activated at 6:42 p.m. It's 8:51 now.”

More than two hours.

Luca's gaze moved slowly to Vanessa.

She had taken a step backward.

“Luca, listen to me. I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

“She was being difficult. She wouldn't stay in the nursery, and she kept interrupting the dinner preparations. I asked Michael to put her somewhere quiet until the guests had arrived.”

“Somewhere quiet?” Luca repeated.

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the broken portrait. “It's an old security room. It isn't dangerous.”

Lily lifted her head from Luca's shoulder.

“She said I had to stay until you stopped loving me.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Vanessa shook her head. “She's three. She doesn't understand what she heard.”

Luca looked down at his daughter. “Sweetheart, did Vanessa put you in there?”

Lily nodded.

“Did someone close the door?”

“She did. Then she said I was naughty.”

Vanessa's voice rose. “She was throwing things! She scratched me! I was trying to keep her safe.”

Luca stood with Lily in his arms.

“Daniel, call Dr. Patel. Tell him to come to the house immediately. And call the police.”

Several guests shifted uneasily. A man near the fireplace whispered that involving the police would create a scandal. Luca heard him.

“Anyone who wants to leave may do so,” he said. “Anyone who touches a camera, deletes a message, or interferes with an officer will be treated as part of the investigation.”

Vanessa stared at him. “You're calling the police on your fiancée?”

“I'm calling them because my daughter was imprisoned in my house.”

“I did it for us.”

Luca's eyes narrowed. “There is no us.”

The words landed harder than a slap.

Vanessa reached for his arm. He moved away.

“Luca, please. Think about what this looks like. Your guests saw a maid destroy your portrait. They don't know the whole story.”

“They heard my child crying.”

“She was never in danger.”

Luca looked toward the open room. “Then why was the door locked from the outside?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Behind him, Hannah swayed.

Daniel noticed first. “Boss, she's going down.”

Luca turned in time to see the sledgehammer slip from her hand. Hannah caught the edge of a table, but her injured leg folded beneath her. She sank to the floor, leaving a red smear against the white linen.

Lily gasped.

“Miss Hannah!”

Luca handed his daughter carefully to Daniel.

“Stay with Uncle Daniel, sweetheart.”

Then he crossed the room and knelt beside the housekeeper.

“Don't move,” he said.

Hannah tried to push herself upright. “I'm fine.”

“You're bleeding through your uniform.”

“Lily needed help.”

“Who cut you?”

Her eyes flicked toward Vanessa.

That was answer enough.

Luca looked at Daniel. “Get the medical team here. Now.”

Vanessa's composure cracked. “She attacked me first!”

Hannah shook her head, breathing hard. “You took the knife from the maintenance trolley.”

“Shut your mouth!”

Luca rose halfway.

“Say one more word to her.”

Vanessa stopped.

The engagement ring still sat untouched in its velvet box. The champagne was warm. The dinner had become a crime scene. And the woman Luca had intended to marry had just revealed a cruelty he could no longer explain away.

A paramedic team arrived within minutes. They examined Hannah's thigh, wrapped her arms, and checked the cuts on her cheek. Dr. Patel arrived shortly afterward and took Lily into a quiet sitting room for an assessment.

Luca remained near the doorway, listening to every word.

“She is frightened and dehydrated,” the doctor said. “Her blood sugar is low. I don't see signs of serious injury, but I want to monitor her overnight.”

“Do whatever you need.”

“And the housekeeper?”

“Treat her first. Whatever it costs.”

Hannah looked up from the stretcher. “Please don't fire me.”

Luca stared at her.

“Why would I fire you?”

“Because I broke the portrait.”

For the first time that night, something close to disbelief crossed his face.

“My daughter was locked behind it.”

“I know.”

“You saved her.”

Hannah swallowed. “I just heard her crying.”

Luca glanced toward the room where Lily was being examined. “That was enough.”

A uniformed officer approached and asked Luca to identify the people who had been present when the door opened. Luca gave the names without hesitation. When the officer asked whether he wanted to make a formal complaint, Luca answered yes.

Vanessa watched him from the far side of the room.

“You'll regret this,” she whispered.

Luca looked at her.

“No, Vanessa. I regret not seeing you sooner.”

The officer guided her toward a separate room to take her statement. She did not resist, but her eyes stayed fixed on Luca until the door closed.

Only then did he look down at the ring box.

He picked it up, opened it, and removed the diamond ring. For a moment he held it in his palm. Then he placed it on the table beside the untouched champagne.

There would be no wedding.

But as Lily reached for him from the sitting room doorway, Luca understood that canceling an engagement was the easiest part of what lay ahead.

Because his daughter had been hidden inside his own house.

And someone had known exactly how to keep him from hearing her.
