Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FOR THE CHILD

Vanessa Bellini requested a meeting three days later.

Her attorney sent a formal letter asking to speak with Luca at a neutral location. The proposed agenda was narrow: return of personal belongings, withdrawal of the engagement announcement, and a private agreement regarding the disputed residential placement.

Detective Ellis advised Luca not to attend without counsel.

He agreed.

The meeting was held in a conference room at a law office near the river. Luca arrived with Robert Kane and a second attorney. Ellis sat in an adjoining room with two investigators, listening through a permitted recording arrangement.

Vanessa entered wearing a charcoal suit and no jewelry. Her hair was pulled back. Without the wedding gown and carefully arranged smile, she looked smaller.

She sat across from Luca.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Say what you came to say.”

Her attorney placed a folder on the table.

“Ms. Bellini is prepared to sign a statement relinquishing any claim to the Moretti estate, provided Mr. Moretti agrees to withdraw his complaint concerning the incident involving the child.”

Luca did not touch the folder.

“There is no agreement.”

Vanessa's eyes lifted.

“Luca, I made a mistake.”

“You locked my daughter in a room.”

“I was trying to keep her from disrupting the dinner.”

“For two hours?”

“I lost track of time.”

“You cut the emergency phone line?”

“No.”

“You forged my signature?”

“I didn't forge anything.”

“Your access code opened the room. Your company funded the facility. Your messages say the child had to be removed before the ceremony ended.”

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Those messages are being taken out of context.”

Luca leaned forward.

“Then give me the context.”

She looked toward her attorney.

He cleared his throat. “We are not here to discuss criminal allegations.”

“Then why are you here?”

Vanessa folded her hands.

“I loved you.”

Luca almost laughed.

“You loved the life you thought you could control.”

“I wanted a future with you.”

“You wanted Lily gone.”

“She was never going to accept me.”

“She was three.”

“She cried every time I came near you. She interrupted our dinners. She refused to let you spend time with me. You made her the center of everything.”

Luca stared at her.

“She is my daughter.”

“And I was supposed to be your wife.”

“You knew that when you agreed to marry me.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained sharp.

“I thought you would change after the wedding.”

“Change what?”

“Your priorities.”

Luca sat back.

There it was. The truth beneath every excuse.

Vanessa had not wanted to become Lily's stepmother. She had wanted to replace her.

“You should have told me,” he said.

“I did. You never listened.”

“You never said you wanted my daughter removed.”

“I knew you would say no.”

“So you forged my signature.”

Vanessa looked away.

Her attorney closed the folder.

“This meeting is over.”

But Luca remained seated.

“Who is Carlo Bellini's partner?”

Vanessa's eyes snapped back.

“I don't know what you mean.”

“Peter Sloane. Grant Mercer. The private facility. Who else?”

“I didn't know about Grant.”

“Who was the man in the camera recording?”

Vanessa's expression shifted.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“I want to leave.”

“Answer the question.”

Her attorney stood. “My client will not answer.”

Luca rose as well.

“Then tell her this: if she comes within a hundred yards of Lily, I will ask the court for every protection available. And if anyone contacts Hannah again, the message will be turned over to the police.”

Vanessa stood.

“You're choosing a maid over me?”

Luca's face went still.

“No. I'm choosing the people who did not hurt my daughter.”

He left.

In the adjoining room, Detective Ellis stopped the recording.

“Her reaction to Carlo's name was interesting.”

“She knows something.”

“Or she's afraid of him.”

Luca looked at the detective.

“Find him.”

That afternoon, a police team located Carlo Bellini at a private airfield outside the city. He was preparing to board a charter flight using a passport issued under a different name. Officers arrested him before the aircraft left the ground.

His luggage contained cash, two encrypted phones, and a folder of documents related to the residential facility. Investigators also found draft guardianship papers and a letter from a private physician who had agreed to evaluate Luca without meeting him.

The letter described Luca as “emotionally unstable, prone to violent episodes, and potentially unfit to maintain sole custody.”

It had been written before any examination.

Carlo Bellini was taken into custody.

When Detective Ellis questioned him, he denied knowing about the locked room. He claimed the residential placement had been Vanessa's idea and that he had only helped with financing because he wanted his daughter to have a stable marriage.

The investigators showed him the forged documents.

Then the bank transfers.

Then the messages.

Carlo stopped denying the financial arrangement.

He said Peter Sloane had approached him with a proposal: if Lily were placed in a private facility and Luca were temporarily declared unfit, Vanessa could gain control over family decisions while the engagement was still intact. Once the marriage occurred, she would have a legal claim to manage certain trust assets.

Carlo insisted he had believed the plan would be peaceful.

The detective asked why he had paid a security officer to disable cameras.

He said nothing.

The case grew larger by the hour.

At the mansion, Hannah was helping Lily choose fabric samples for the rabbit room. The construction crew had removed the portrait frame and opened the wall. Behind it, the hidden room had been stripped down to bare concrete.

Lily held up a piece of yellow fabric.

“This one.”

“It's cheerful,” Hannah said.

“Like sunshine.”

“Exactly.”

Luca entered and watched them for a moment.

“That's the one, then.”

Lily smiled. “Daddy says yes.”

The child ran to show him another sample. Hannah stood carefully, using the edge of the table for support.

“How are you feeling?” Luca asked.

“Better. The stitches come out next week.”

“Good.”

He looked at the samples.

“Thank you for helping.”

“Lily asked me.”

“Still.”

A quiet moment passed.

Then Luca said, “Carlo Bellini has been arrested.”

Hannah's smile faded.

“Was he involved?”

“He financed the facility and helped prepare the false guardianship petition. We believe he was the man Vanessa spoke to in the pantry corridor.”

Hannah looked down.

“Then the plan was bigger than one bad decision.”

“Yes.”

“Is it over?”

Luca considered the question.

“The people who arranged it are in custody or under investigation. But we still need to establish whether anyone else was involved.”

Hannah nodded.

Lily tugged at his sleeve.

“Daddy, can the rabbit room have a window?”

“Yes.”

“And a lock?”

Luca crouched.

“Only one you can open from inside.”

Lily thought about that, then nodded.

Hannah felt the words settle into the room.

Only one you can open from inside.

It was a small promise. A practical one. But it was the first time Luca had spoken about the hidden room without looking like he was fighting something inside himself.

Later, after Lily had gone upstairs with Sofia, Hannah found Luca standing alone in the west hallway.

The demolition crew had uncovered a small metal plate beneath the old doorframe. It contained the manual release mechanism and a second lock that could be controlled remotely.

Luca touched the cold metal.

“I walked past this hallway every day,” he said.

Hannah stood beside him.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

“You trusted the people you hired.”

“And they used that trust.”

He turned toward her.

“Do you think I can make this house feel safe for her again?”

Hannah looked at the empty doorway.

“Not by pretending it never happened.”

“I know.”

“Let Lily decide what she wants this room to become. Let the staff speak up when something feels wrong. And don't make people afraid to tell you bad news.”

Luca gave a small, tired smile.

“You make it sound simple.”

“It isn't.”

She started to walk away, but he spoke again.

“Hannah.”

She turned.

“Thank you for coming back.”

She looked at the yellow fabric samples still resting on the worktable.

“I'm not coming back for the house.”

“I know.”

“I'm coming back for Lily.”

Luca nodded.

“That's why I trust you.”

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Daniel appeared at the far end of the hall.

“Boss. Detective Ellis called. They found a second payment to the facility. It came from a company that has no connection to the Bellinis.”

Luca's expression sharpened.

“Who owns it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Michael Moretti.”

The hallway seemed to narrow.

Hannah looked from Daniel to Luca.

The investigation was not finished.

And the person who had helped put Lily behind the wall might have been closer to the family than anyone had wanted to believe.

The arrest of Carlo Bellini changed the atmosphere at the mansion. Staff members who had spent days looking over their shoulders began speaking more freely. One driver remembered being asked to take an empty child-sized suitcase to the service entrance. A laundry worker recalled finding a second set of children's clothes in Vanessa's guest suite. Neither detail proved a crime by itself, but both helped investigators reconstruct how carefully the removal had been prepared.

Luca listened to each account. He did not want another employee to believe that keeping quiet was safer than telling the truth. By the end of the day, the police had a clearer timeline and a list of everyone who had entered the west corridor during the previous month.
