Chapter 2 - THE PAPER WITH HIS SIGNATURE

The first person Luca called after the police finished their initial interviews was his attorney.

The second was the hospital.

The third was Michael.

His younger brother answered on the fourth ring.

“Luca? What's going on? I heard the dinner ended.”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Which home?”

A pause.

“Mine. Why?”

“Come to the mansion.”

“It's nearly midnight.”

“Then you'll have a short night.”

Luca ended the call before Michael could ask another question.

He stood in the library while Dr. Patel checked Lily's temperature in the adjoining sitting room. The little girl had fallen asleep on the sofa with her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin. Every few minutes she stirred and reached for the empty space beside her. Luca stayed close enough that she could see him when she opened her eyes.

Hannah had been taken to a nearby hospital for stitches and a deeper examination of the wound on her thigh. Before leaving, she had asked twice whether Lily was safe.

Luca had promised she was.

He intended to make that promise true.

Daniel entered carrying a tablet.

“Security footage is preserved,” he said. “The hallway camera shows Vanessa entering the west corridor at 6:37. She leaves five minutes later. At 6:42, the hidden-room lock activates.”

“Who was with her?”

“No one visible.”

“Check the service corridor.”

Daniel swiped to another clip. “Michael appears at 6:29. He carries a folded blanket and a cup. He leaves at 6:46.”

Luca stared at the screen.

“Why was he carrying a blanket?”

“Could have been for Lily.”

“Or for a room where he knew she was being kept.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Luca took the tablet and watched the footage again. Michael had looked over his shoulder before entering the west corridor. He had left without looking toward the camera.

“Find out who installed the secondary lock.”

“Already working on it.”

“And the access code?”

“Registered to Vanessa's guest profile. It was used from the panel outside the room.”

Luca returned the tablet.

“Get the full access history for the last six months.”

Daniel hesitated. “Boss, there is another issue.”

“What?”

“The document Lily gave you.”

Luca looked toward the coffee table. The folded paper lay inside a clear evidence sleeve. The officer had photographed it before allowing Luca to examine the copy. It was a proposed authorization to transfer Lily to a private residential care facility, supposedly for an extended behavioral assessment. The document listed Luca as the parent requesting the placement.

At the bottom was a signature that looked like his.

It wasn't.

He knew because he had never seen the document, and because the signature included a small loop he had stopped using years earlier.

“Who prepared it?”

“The letterhead belongs to a family-services consultancy in Connecticut. They say they received the request through a law office representing you.”

“Which law office?”

“Not ours.”

Luca looked at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

His daughter had been scheduled for removal before the engagement dinner.

“Call the consultancy,” he said. “Tell them not to destroy a single email, file, or call log. Then have our attorneys notify the court that the signature is disputed and that no one has authority to move Lily.”

Daniel nodded.

“And find out who paid them.”

A soft voice came from the doorway.

“Daddy?”

Luca turned immediately.

Lily stood in the hall wearing a borrowed cardigan over her pink dress. Her curls were tangled, and she was holding the stuffed rabbit by one ear.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

She walked into his arms.

“Is Miss Hannah okay?”

“She is at the hospital. The doctors are taking care of her.”

“Did she get hurt because of me?”

Luca crouched in front of her.

“No. She got hurt because an adult made a terrible choice. You didn't do anything wrong.”

Lily considered that.

“Can we see her?”

“Tomorrow, if the doctors say it's okay.”

She nodded, then glanced at the paper on the table.

“That's the paper Vanessa gave me.”

Luca's stomach tightened.

“Tell me about it.”

Vanessa had folded the document into a small square and placed it in Lily's dress pocket. She had told the child it was a special paper that would help her go to a new house after the wedding. Lily had not understood what that meant. She had only been told to keep it safe and not show Daddy until the right time.

“Did she tell you why you were going to another house?”

Lily looked down.

“She said you would be busy with your new family.”

Luca felt something cold settle behind his ribs.

“You are my family.”

“She said you wanted a grown-up daughter.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“No, baby. I want you. I have always wanted you.”

Lily leaned into him.

“Even when I'm naughty?”

“Especially when you need me to help you.”

She seemed to accept that, though her fingers remained curled tightly in his shirt.

Michael arrived twenty minutes later.

He entered the library without his usual grin. He had changed out of his dinner jacket and wore dark jeans and a black sweater. His eyes moved first to Luca, then to Lily, then to the evidence sleeve on the table.

“What happened?”

Luca gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

Michael did.

“Did you put Lily in the west hallway room?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“Did you take a blanket and a cup into that corridor at 6:29?”

Michael looked toward the tablet.

“I was asked to bring something.”

“By whom?”

“Vanessa.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That Lily was having a tantrum and needed to calm down before the dinner.”

“Did you see her?”

Michael hesitated.

“I saw her through the door.”

“Was she crying?”

“Yes.”

“And you left?”

“I thought Vanessa was staying with her.”

“You knew the door was locked.”

Michael's jaw tightened. “I didn't know it was a security room. She told me it was a quiet room.”

Luca stepped closer.

“You saw my daughter crying behind a locked door, and you walked away.”

“I was trying to keep the evening from turning into a fight.”

“You were trying to keep your evening comfortable.”

Michael stood. “That's not fair.”

Luca's voice dropped. “Fair? My three-year-old was locked in a dark room for more than two hours.”

“I didn't lock her in!”

“But you knew she was there.”

Michael's expression collapsed for a second.

“I didn't think Vanessa would leave her.”

“You didn't think. That's the problem.”

Lily watched from the sofa, silent now.

Luca noticed and forced himself to lower his voice.

“Daniel will take your statement. You will give him every detail, including what Vanessa told you and whether anyone else knew.”

Michael rubbed both hands over his face.

“Luca, she said she was trying to prepare Lily for the transition.”

“What transition?”

“The wedding.”

Luca looked at him.

Michael swallowed. “She said once you were married, Lily would live somewhere with more structure. A residential place. She said it would be temporary.”

Luca glanced at the forged authorization.

“Did she show you this?”

Michael shook his head. “No.”

“Did you know she planned to send my daughter away?”

“I thought you had agreed.”

Luca took a slow breath.

“Why would I agree to send my child away?”

Michael had no answer.

Daniel escorted him to the security office to provide a statement. Luca remained in the library with Lily asleep against his side.

At 2:14 a.m., his attorney called.

The consultancy had confirmed that a request had been submitted through a private legal account. The firm had received a retainer from Bellini Family Holdings, a company controlled by Vanessa's father. The document was not a valid custody order, but the consultancy had been told it was part of an agreed placement plan.

There was another detail.

The proposed facility had been paid a six-month deposit.

The money had come from an account belonging to Moretti Family Trust Services.

Luca sat very still.

Someone had used his family's trust to finance the removal of his daughter.

“Who authorized the transfer?” he asked.

His attorney said the payment required two approvals. One had been issued under Luca's corporate signature. The other belonged to the trust administrator.

“Name.”

“Your chief financial officer, Peter Sloane.”

Luca looked at the dark window.

Peter had managed the family accounts for nine years. He had attended Lily's christening. He had sent flowers when Luca's wife died. He knew every trust, every holding company, and every private security arrangement.

“Freeze every account he can access,” Luca said. “And do not alert him.”

After the call, Luca looked down at Lily.

The little girl had one hand wrapped around his finger.

Vanessa had not acted alone.

Someone had arranged the paperwork, paid the facility, and forged his name. Someone had prepared to remove Lily from the house before the engagement dinner ever began.

The hidden room was not the plan.

It was only the first step.

Luca picked up his phone and sent Daniel one message.

Find Peter Sloane. Quietly. Now.

Then he settled Lily more comfortably against his chest and watched the night fade beyond the library windows.

He had spent years building a world where people feared crossing him.

May you like

Yet the people closest to him had crossed the one line that mattered.

And this time, he would not let the truth be buried behind a locked door.
